Discussion
Passed my mod 2 today at the 3rd time of asking thank God ! Any tips on which bike..have a Fazer 600 in garage as it's been left by my FIL as he stopped riding few months ago..has a full mot but also a choke !?
Also like the BMW g310r as I ride short distances to work like 5 miles each way....my budget isn't much tbh and initially I wanted smaller proper bike to work my up until the Fazer fell into my lap...
Any tips be greatly appreciated

The fazer is no quicker than what you would have past your test on.
Low down there's not a lot of go, certainly nothing to scare you. Higher up they start to shift which will Initially feel stupidly quick, then after a few weeks your brain gets used to it.
You'll soon be hankering after something a little newer and quicker and so on until your perched on a 160-200bhp missile which will make you think that your old fazer was broken...

Ive had my wee fazer 600 for around 6 years now and can do around 2k miles a month on it sometimes..
Great bikes, a parts bin special for the most part but are more fun than they have any right to be.
Easy to ride, can do fast roads/motorways/city riding and they are pretty bullet proof and easy to work on…
Great 1st big bike, What’s the issue with a choke?

No issue with a choke but tbh I've never even heard of it and how to use it !
It’s very easy, don’t worry about it…https://www.manualslib.com/manual/611269/Yamaha-Fa...
Use it when the engine is cold… only need it a for a few minutes at most usually… you’ll get to know when your bike is ‘warm’ enough to switch it off.

Fazer 600 would be my choice - it might seem like a lot as a newb, but with an inline four it won't be some uncontrollable torque monster.
I wouldn't bother with a G310 - seems like the worst of all worlds to me.
I’ve owned two G310s, the GS version. I’d go for a 310 GS over an old Fazer 600 any day. It’s cheap to buy, cheap to insure and cheap to run. Good value used and on PCP. Can do 70 on the motorway and will do more than that comfortably (so I’ve heard). They have a decent screen and weather protection. Wide bars and a comfortable upright riding position. Very light and handle well. Easy to work on and parts from BMW aren’t that expensive. Newer models have very good LED lights. It also has ABS, which I’d say is vital. I would start with the Fazer, it’s there to use, good to gain experience on and parts are cheap and widely available.
If you’re interested in performance as well it will wallop a G310. The Fazer will do 0-60 in low 3’s if you’re brave enough and is a very fast bike if you rev it out.
It even makes the fastest 0-60 time list: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fastest_pr...
I also think around 90-120bhp is perfect for the road.
And then if you want more you’ll be well placed to upgrade having gained experience on a middle performance bike.

Maybe it's me being a prima donna, but I don't think a bike with 34hp is going to get my blood pumping faster. Why would you have one when you can get the mid sized GS of various generations instead, or even the big boy. They're also cheap to run, and hold their value better.
And if you really want a small adventure bike I'd have the KTM 390 instead - 10kg lighter, 10hp more, better electronics

And an old Fazer 600 wouldn’t get my blood pumping faster either. They’re ok if you like commuter-type bikes, just not my sort of thing. In fairness I was just giving my opinion, having owned two and enjoyed both (albeit one was the Rally Raid). The OP wanted an opinion on the 310 platform. It’s not a patch on the ‘real’ GS (I’ve owned a 1200ADV, and an F850) but would be a great starter bike for all the reasons I listed.
For a new rider it would be a great bike. As would the 390. Just personal preference, I’d have either of those over a Fazer 600.
I passed on a Yamaha MT-07 in September. I bought a BMW G310R and I like it. Unlike the MT-07 the instrument panel can be seen without dipping my head to see it (my biggest dislike of the Yamaha).
It will do 70 happily on a dual carriageway and is nimble and fun on the back roads. With its slipper clutch and drive by wire throttle it’s easy to get to grips with and ride smoothly. LED lights are good.
Of course I’ll get something bigger in due course but for now I’m enjoying serving my apprenticeship on it and I’m getting out on it at every available opportunity (get the heated grips and fit hand guards, they make colder days more bearable).

You’ve got a free bike sitting in the garage so why not use it? It seems silly not to take advantage of what you already have.
After a few months you’ll be able to decide if you want faster/slower/bigger or smaller.
And when you drop it (as you inevitably will) it won’t be quite as upsetting..or expensive.

I passed on a mt07 which was a nice bike...failed on a Kawasaki 650 which i didn't like so much!
if you can, go to sit on it and have a feel the weight, the sitting ergonomic etc I am short and typical oriental asian build those l4 never suit me and I dislike the characteristic of l4 on a bike (hornet 600 being my first large bike dont help), I perfer twin or l3 or V4
G310R would be easier to ride being lighter and a single cyliner but I am not fan of it either, I found 600-650cc is the most comfortable and usable power for daily use
a "nice bike" for me might not be the "nice bike" for you, only you know what you feel comfortable with

Not intended as a personal attack at all, just an observation that from the view of the sofa there seem to be a lot of bikes I'd rather have. The beauty of it all is we're both right, as we like what we've got. In fairness I was just giving my opinion, having owned two and enjoyed both (albeit one was the Rally Raid). Exactly - you've got a capable bike in the garage ready to go.After a few months you’ll be able to decide if you want faster/slower/bigger or smaller.
