Yamaha MT09 Talk to me...
Discussion
I have had my 2016 MT09 for nearly 4 years and just over 9000 miles.
It has been very reliable, cheap to run, about 50mpg no matter how I ride it. I do all my own servicing and maintenance and find it reasonably easy to do.
It was written off 3 years ago when a stupid b***h in a Range Rover decided to ram me out of the way on a roundabout, I bought the salvage off the insurance company for £935 and spent less than £450 putting it right as it was just cosmetic damage.
If you decide on an aftermarket exhaust for it I found the original Akrapovic exhaust made a droning noise that gave me a headache, sold the Akra for over £500 and bought a second hand standard exhaust for £35. I also tried a Scorpion Red Power exhaust that a mate was selling but found it too noisy.
I only use mine for fun so it is just dry weather bike really, they are a bit of a budget bike so commuting through bad weather / winter may show up where Yamaha have saved money.

I’ve had mine since buying new in 2016..
It’s been a great bike, nothing has went wrong with it at all.
I’ve serviced it myself since day 1.
I have done a few mods inc:
Ohlins rear shock with hyper pro front springs.
Quick shifter with race shift
Larger Brembo discs
Reflashed ECU
Comfier seat
It’s a fun wee bike, plenty of power and light to throw around…

All I've heard is that the suspension is appalling.
Oops, forgot to mention that I have modified the suspension.I have Hyperpro fork springs in and rear shock has a Hyperpro spring in as well, a bit budget for some people but they are good enough for me especially as they were bought second hand off ebay.
I had an SP, the engine was great, the rest of the bike felt quite cheap, the brakes were adequate but wooden (and way behind the brembos on my previous street triple), the fuelling is also snatchy and pretty st as it was was very hard to open the throttle smoothly on corner entry, but the worst bit was the suspension, it used to tie itself in knots when pushed hard and would get into a hell of of weave that left you no option but to close the throttle and slow down, the motorcross style riding position and long forks were to blame in my opinion, at sensible road speed's under 7/10's it was fine, but if you ride hard and push towards its limits it falls apart. it was also limited to 140mph.
Fo what my opinion is worth I tried a demo bike from local dealer after they had been out a year but not massively impressed.
Lively enough & seemed to handle ok but I couldn't get away from the feeling of lack of quality. Switches, plastics, bars etc just felt cheap.
That was coming from a Honda mind you

Yes, to clarify I am looking at buying new.
I've got a 2021 Gen 3 Storm Fluo. The fuelling and suspension are better than the 2 previous generations, although the suspension is still budget. You will only notice this if you are riding at 8 tenths and above. Get the SP if you require better suspension. (I don't)
The Gen 3 has loads of electronic gadgetry which can all be turned off if you wish. It wheelies for fun and it is really comfortable to ride. I can be out all day with no issue, and I'm an old git. An hour on an R6 or the like and I'm ruined. lol
I absolutely love mine.
Cant comment on weathering issues as I'm a fairweather rider, and its in the garage on an optimate till spring.
It's a Yamaha. They don't go wrong (touches wood. lol)
Mate of mine bought one, very good bikes.
If i had to be picky, the quality of some of the bolts and fittings isn’t great and for me, they need a good performance exhaust and the steering felt a bit vague. His may have head play though
