I've been offered a GSXR600 2001

HPI / the insurance database has it registered as a GSXR750 but as 600cc

I presume it is a GSXR750 but either someone has swapped a 600 engine into it OR they have just declared a smaller engine for "insurance purposes"

Is there a quick way to check - via the engine number or an obvious visual difference ?

At this age / £2k price level does it matter or is it going to be a pain to sell / insure ?

Think these have the oil capacity stamped onto the crank case, maybe you can use this

A GSX-R600K1 has RWU forks. A GSX-R750K1 has USD forks.

They are immediately obvious which is which but that does assume it's the original forks

The vin number would tell you for certain what it was originally.

A 2001 GSXR600 should start JS1GN7
A 2001 GSXR750 should start JS1GR7

Thanks...

I now have pics of the V5

GSXR-750Y
600cc

It has RWU forks

Vin JS1BD1111
Engine N723

Which doesn't seem to match that vin decoder confused

So having looked at several decoders I'm walking away - it seems it's a GSXR750 that's a "Business" model sub 90cc eek

A google on that suggests N723 **is** the 600

https://www.gsxr.com/threads/how-2-identify-engine...

I think I might have sold you a slightly bum steer though. I've just checked my 2000 Suzuki and it doesn't match that either.

If I make up the rest I get it as a GSX-R750 if I try here: https://www.vindecoderz.com/EN/check-lookup/JS1BD1... (although I should mention that if I plug in my VIN that does work to show mine as the correct model....but not the correct year).

Still it has me question if it's maybe been rebuilt from a GSX-R750 frame, certainly enough doubt that I'd personally pass on it.

It might simply be a case of the original dealer registering it wrong - I had a Honda CRX showing unladen weight & carrying capacity on its V5.

The 750Y would have been 2000 rather than 2001, 1st yeR of this model 750 would have had small red flashes near the headlight.

Can you post any photos?

What if you put the frame number into a parts search, see what model that gives.

Seems unusual for someone to change the motor and forks on a 750, the sinister thought would be a stolen 600 built into a legit 750 frame but surely the engine number would raise queries.

I'd defo walk away. It's hard enough to work out what it is here with friendly supportive guys. Imagine having the same conversation with plod or an angry owner.. sounds like more hassle that its worth.

That's what I've done, the owner has had it for 15 years and never questioned it although you'd think his insurers would.

I've told him to stick it on ebay as a track bike.

Good man. The insurers are quite happy to take the renewals knowing full well they can walk away from any future claim wink

Yes, some bikes have the volume of oil required on the engine. Capacity is possibly not the right word, but it's still a helpful suggestion. I don't know enough about the 600 and 750 to know if the volumes are different for each though.
