2021 BMW 1000 RR
Discussion
I had the opportunity today to take my friends BMW for a running in spin. It blew my mind, I have never known such a comfortable and easy to ride bike, that can also annihilate any speed limit anywhere, at any given time.
I have rode many of the older generation bmw 1000rr bikes and as easy as they are to ride they are nothing in comparison to the latest one.
This latest one is so smooth both on the throttle, through the gears and in the corner, it is like you are on an arcade machine.
If there is any better recognised 1000cc machine this year I would be gobsmacked.

I’m a huge fan of the S1000RR. I’ve owned a Gen 1 for road (got it in March 2010) and track, an HP4 for road and a Gen 3 Superstock race bike bought from a BSB team. I was loaned a Gen 4 last summer for a weekend and it was incredible. Better than my race bike even with all the road kit on it. Pretty certain the carbon wheels made a huge difference to the feeling and handling and that altered the way everything else felt.
The only annoying part of the loan was getting caught speeding within an hour of getting on it. Stupidly I knew there was nearly always a speed trap there, but the throttle is so sensitive that holding a steady 60mph clearly wasn’t going to happen. I got done at 69, so not the end of the world. It did make me decide to quit sports bikes on the road though, as the rest of the weekend was a blur and long ban incoming if caught.

I remember the long weekend ending with you grunting and groaning because you were too old and fat for a sportsbike whilst myself and BN were happy as Larry on our more upright bikes

whilst the M Sport I rode was the best handling sports bike Ive ever been on, I was disappointed in how flat / little power there was low down.
I wouldn't buy one - maybe an R1m and buy some carbon wheels for that.
Having owned the base model for 5 years, the BMW is a far better bike IMHO. The R1M looks more special and I did consider one but there are some flaws to the R1 platform that makes the BMW superior in my view. I wouldn't buy one - maybe an R1m and buy some carbon wheels for that.

And that’s why they’re all long gone. I’m seriously tempted by an S1000R over here now. Although the drivers and prices here are both shocking. I am still bloody torn on either a upright Ducati, SDR, or the 1000R, versus the S1000RR.
What the hell is wrong with me.
Compared to most other superbikes, the S1000RR is practically a tourer, aside from the granite M seat. Put a more comfy seat on it and I could see it being good for some pretty long days. In fact a mate rides one and some of the days he's done on it are unreal, many hundreds of miles in a day. That's a Sport model so the regular seat pad. What the hell is wrong with me.

In my head the S1000RR is still a relatively new bike. The only annoying part of the loan was getting caught speeding within an hour of getting on it. 2010, Christ.
I’ve ridden a 2021 bike and have a 2016 R1M, handling wise I don’t think there’s a lot in it but I didn’t ride the BMW for that long to be fair.
One area it absolutely pisses on the R1 is the fuelling and lack of a jerky/snatchy throttle.
I don’t think there’s loads of difference performance wise but the BMW is very easy to get on and feel at home on and ride fast straight away, it’s always been the S1000s strong suit.
If I were buying a brand new bike I’d pick one of these over the R1, although I am thinking of upgrading next year and all I can think is I want the new Aprilia.

Agree with all of this. The throttle was the main gripe for me and I spent a small fortune trying to sort it on my 2015. The brakes on the BMW are leagues ahead too. One area it absolutely pisses on the R1 is the fuelling and lack of a jerky/snatchy throttle.

I can’t really comment on the brakes on my R1 as the previous owner put braided lines on it and I think a different master cylinder, they’ve always felt pretty good to me.
I don’t think the 2021 BMW is a quantum leap ahead of a 2015+ R1 handling or performance wise (not like the original S1000RR was over the competition when it came out) but it is a better bike in that it’s more comfortable, easier to get more from and just nicer to live with, I think they’re both great bikes, honestly you can’t buy a bad modern superbike though.
If I do change bikes next year the BMW will be a very strong contender, I just know how much I like the Aprilia!.
Another thing BMW are or were great on is customer service, years ago I bought an early S1000RR approved used and it was one that slipped through the net for a recall and the engine was damaged, BMW couldn’t have been better about it if they tried, came and picked me and the bike up where I’d broken down, took me back to the dealership and gave me an F800R loan bike to go home on/use and had it turned around with a new engine fitted within 5 days, somehow I couldn’t see that happening with Aprilia.

I upgraded the brakes too, RCS19 M/C and race pads. You're right about performance and handling, both are awesome. If anything the R1 is a bit more exciting.I don’t think the 2021 BMW is a quantum leap ahead of a 2015+ R1 handling or performance wise (not like the original S1000RR was over the competition when it came out) but it is a better bike in that it’s more comfortable, easier to get more from and just nicer to live with, I think they’re both great bikes, honestly you can’t buy a bad modern superbike though.

I had an RVS4 Factory before the '15 and the shoddy build quality was the reason I got rid of it. Awesome chassis though, I'd dearly love a new one but the dealer network and support just isn't there.
