Ever since covid started I've never removed my helmet, nor been asked to.

Whilst I can understand it looking a bit strange wearing a helmet to do your weekly shop etc I'm usually just out in a local shop to pick up a loaf of bread etc

Today I encountered quite a stroppy woman in the Post Office, who insisted I take it off (I've worn it in there loads of times before)

I have a clear visor so she had a better view of my face than if I was wearing a mask, I'd waited in the queue and had a parcel in hand

I politely refused pointing out that they asked customers to wear masks and this was doing the same job

Glasses, earplugs and my aversion to pointless rules mean that I'd rather not remove it unless I need to.

I've googled and seen that helmet removal used to be a thing but with all the mask wearing I was surprised that it still is, have I just been lucky until now ?

It's just good form & polite to remove it. (not exactly a chore)

I've worked on cash tills & it does make you uncomfortable when faced by a helmet wearing customer. A mask is serving a purpose, a helmet isn't.

Sounds like you were being a tt. It's pretty common and obvious that you don't walk into shops or petrol stations wearing a full face helmet and this is nothing to do with masks.

Don't some/most petrol stations display signage at the pumps instructing helmets to be removed? Or is that just one particularly akward company?! biggrin

It seems you can't read or comprehend - the question was have I just been lucky ?

I have been going into shops, post offices, petrol stations etc for 18 months without issue - a helmet does exactly the same thing as a mask (or visor) and you can see more of my face with a helmet !

Surely the last 18 months have proved there’s never really been a valid reason to ask us to remove our helmets.

No. It just shows that staff have a lot more serious issues to deal with since CoVID. It is polite to remove a helmet. When I was a lad, men would always remove their hats (commonly worn then) when they went into a shop, or indoors - something I do too.

Sounds like you met a tt: whilst I could understand taking a lid off pre-Covid, now taking it off to put a mask on is a pointless faff. Well done for politely standing your ground.

I never remove mine, especially at this time of year, its a proper faff getting everything 'just so' at times and it's unnecessary I feel, especially now when half the population have their faces covered with their silly masks.

Fair point, but I’m not sure their insistence has anything to do with politeness.

I had the most ridiculous experience in May last year, the height of lockdown. Stopped at a garage near Oswestry and they refused to authorise the pump until I took my helmet off! I've never ever removed my helmet before brimming the tank as I fill it before I get off the bike. Don't we all?

I must be the only person in the world this has happened to?

But in answer to the op, yeah helmet stay on now in garages and maccys.

They do, hence why I'm surprised someone saying they have been walking into shops for 20 odd years!

I've worked in a petrol station & a supermarket before and it was very very rare for a biker NOT to remove their helmet hence my rather blunt response that it appears a minority including the OP have been lucky to get away with what I consider rude behaviour.

Petrol stations and paper shop fair enough, leave it on.

Banks, post offices and supermarkets I'd personally take it off even if just make others feel more at ease. In the same way I wouldn't walk around with my t-shirt off or mortal drunk.

I never remove my helmet at gas stations. I have a flip front helmet though. No plans to start removing my helmet.

I've always wore my helmet when paying for fuel, again like most on here without issues.

I guess I must be a tt too then, oh well biggrin

Eh? Shops, no argument, but petrol stations…nope. I wear my helmet in petrol stations all the time and always have. Length and breadth of the country. I’ve been asked to remove it twice and each time chose to leave and use another nearby.

You walked into a post office with a full face helmet? Wow!

Petrol stations are the only place I’ll keep mine on, most around Sussex have changed their signs from remove the helmet to opening your visor upon entry.

I always take my helmet off before going into a shop/petrol station so that I don't look like a massive bellend
