Wheelie school
Discussion
I did bikesafe a few weeks ago and as part of the feedback at the end of the day the officer I rode with suggested ways to progress in the form of the the usual IAM or ROSPA, as well as track days and offroading and asked if I had ever thought of going to wheelie school! I did some green laning and a trackday so thought it was time to give it a go so today I did a day with stunt asylum at north weald. I had an awesome day, went with no expectations of being able to wheelie by the end, but wanted to know what to do and how to react when it feels like my bikes wheel wants to come up. You have 6 15 minute sessions with the tutors watching and giving feedback as needed. They teach clutch up so the first couple of sessions you're trying to find the right speed and the right amount of clutch and then things started to click and much to my surprise I was pulling some fairly good mingers down the air strip. The atmosphere was really friendly and welcoming and there was no bravado. The track day a few weeks ago was good but enjoyed this more, the satisfaction of doing a smooth wheelie is something else. Would definitely recommend it as a way to feel more confident on your bike.

When I did it they had Fazer 600’s that looked stock but they had a couple of mods to make it much easier to get it up.
The front sprocket had been changed to effectively lower the gearing and the forks had no damping at all, just springs. The rear tyre was also half flat, I think the bigger contact patch of the flat tyre aids stability.
The lack of damping allowed loads of weight transfer forward on a closed throttle then it would bounce back and come up with an open throttle.
At the end of the day I could get it up and balance it on the throttle/brake, no problem. Getting back on my CBR600 at the end of the course it was MUCH harder to use the weight transfer method to bring the front up, I couldn’t do it without the clutch on my own bike.

How the heck did you manage to get a slot so quickly? they all seem to be sold out all the time. Edited by GreaseNipple on Saturday 18th September 17:36
