Cleaning a bike jacket

My Alpinestars mesh jacket carries the instruction 'hand wash only'. Not a major task but If I do bung it in a washing machine what's liable to happen?

Will it destroy the jacket? Destroy the washing machine? Involve a small risk of damaging the jacket but Alpinestars are just trying to cover themselves? I don't mind taking a small risk because it's 10 years old and I may well replace it before next summer anyway.

I’ve machined washed it with Nikwax cleaner twice a year for the last 3 years… hasn’t fell apart so far.
