Enjoyed learning to ride on my Sur Ron, and passing my CBT (the the test centre's automatic 125cc moped).
I want to get more time in the saddle before doing a DAS. I've learned lots in the last few months but I know I've got a long way to go yet.

There are basically two choices for me now -
1. Stay with electric and go for a used Zero S. Obvs no clutch and no gears.
2. Get a Honda CBR 125 or similar, with gears and clutch.

Ultimately I will be riding an electric bike, but getting practice in on a geared bike might help me in advance of doing the DAS - which will probably have to be on a geared bike.

Anyone done this route before ?
Anyone done their DAS using an electric bike ?

You're probably not going to be on a restricted bike all that long so I'd buy something at the bottom end of its value to learn on so you don't lose anything when you come to sell it on. I bought a Varadero 125 to use for a few months whilst going through DAS and actually managed to make a reasonable profit on it when I sold it on.

If you're not all that bothered, I'd definitely do your test on a geared bike. Means you have all options open to you then from day you pass your test until you hang your helmet up. Doing it on an electric or DCT means you'll be limited now and in the future.

Friend of mine had a similiar conundrum, he already has an electric 125 equivalent and wanted to keep that aswell as get a DCT bike when he passed. Ended up scrapping the DCT idea and getting a geared Kawasaki Vulcan for touring and keeping his electric for commuting/local runs.

Unless you use your own bike for the training/test I doubt you'll do it on an electric bike. You might find somewhere that has an alternative automatic bike. Either would presumably leave you with an auto only licence and a limited choice of bikes if you ever look beyond the electric ones.

Of the two options I'd buy a £2k 125 not a £10k Zero S, and then get a manual licence.

Ahhh I had not realised there were geared and auto categories for the full licence, just like the car licence.

So, like taking your car licence, there is every reason to do it on a geared bike.

I'll see if I can swap in my Sur Ron for a geared bike, ride that for a while, then do the DAS.

The price difference between ICE and electric bikes is much bigger than for cars. Arse.

Do check, but I think that's the case.

Yep, they make no sense to me, especially one up against a 125 that is a fraction of the cost, won't depreciate, and does 120mpg.
