Hi all, was hoping to leverage the knowledge of some more experienced bikers.

I’ve seen a bike I really like and am a big moto guzzi fan, but it’s been customised and I’ve no idea if it’s horribly overpriced and I’d end up losing tons when I come to sell, or it represents decent value for a V50 that is customised.

This is it https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1346454 and I would expect similar mark ii’s to maybe fetch around £2.5 to £3k, so looking at a premium of a couple thousand for the customised work ( my figures may be off there, not many examples to go off). The customisation work isn’t extensive but extends to electrics which is good, front shocks, tank, paint exhausts plus some other bits, done by a company called La Busca.

There’s a triumph 650 twin 1954 and BSA A7 1958 on their site I really like too, especially the BSA as my dad had one many moons ago, so the guzzi was one of those I just happened upon and like the look a lot, but not sure in terms of getting something classic as a weekend toy whether I’m better off getting a non custom bike with a determinable value like the triumph/bsa or even stock V50.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts and advice.

If you like it , yes it’s hard to put a value on one offs and the unusual , personally I’d rather buy something and regret it than not buy and wish I had !!

A "special" is worth what you think it's worth. Just because you pay a theoretical £5k for it, it doesn't mean it's worth it now or in the future as it is a one-off.

Also specials can be notoriously hard to sell on and the insurance company may well inflate premiums due to the bike being non-standard.

Check your insurance first then pay what you think it's worth to you.

The real answer is there isn't an answer, even the seller to a degree has stuck his finger in the air and come up with a number that they are happy to let it go for based on cost to buy and cost to modify.

The only answer is what else in that kind of style does c5k buy you, are they newer, older, less modified ??

The line about a potential future classic is a load of old tosh, thats reserved for pristine original examples and even then this isn't a get rich bike.

So whats it worth to you to have that style of bike ? And lets say you buy it for 5k and sell it in 3 years for 3k, does it matter ? its cost you 60 quid a month for the joy of owning it, at these numbers its not really a debate.

Nice looking bike but a new V7 stone which looks very similar is less than 3k more and its brand new with a warranty etc

Or a used V7 Cafe racer for about the price of the V50. It'll be a bit on the slow side, but miles quicker than a V50 I'd have thought.

This one's for sale on Biketrader.

judging from other custom things it seems ok price wise. You could get a standard one cheaper (?) but if you like the look of the custom bike more than is it worth the extra £££ to you? Could you create that look yourself?

I recently sold a very nice customised chopper, I suspect it would have cost thousands for the airbrushing alone

I managed to sell for £500 more than a standard bike

My advice is call the seller and say you like it but can't value it at that amount, how close would it have to be ? See what they say, whatever they say, go in lower.

I'd be wanting to know what reinforcing they've done to the rear of the frame to prevent it twisting itself to bits on the first corner now they've cut most of it off...

My 2 pennarth. A standard immaculate V50 Monza is not worth £5k. A normal V50 is £2 to £2.5k at best inho.

One that has been chopped about and painted matt black is worth about £1800 in my eyes.

You would be much better off buying a new or lightly used Royal Enfield 650 for your £5 to £6k budget and lightly customising it as you go. It's new, reliable and has a warranty.

The Missenden Flyer has sent his RE 650 away to be customised. The OP may get some ideas there.

If you like it make an offer. I suspect they’d take a lot less than the asking price.

Perhaps also worth contacting La Busca (they seem to still be going and feature this bike on their site - just one pic though) worth checking it still has all the bits on it from their build?

PS - Is that cycling bar tape on the handlebars? Bit of an odd choice to say the least.

It does look like a bicycle bar tape.

I'm with Chipchap, this is not worth 5k. Especially when you see all these rusty bolts on front discs and swing arm. Get new RE with warranty and do bits by yourself. There are plenty of custom parts for RE (TEC bike parts, BAAK, etc.)

The RE 650 does look a really nice bike, with none of the potential pitfalls of the guzzi. Thanks for the advice and I’ll start doing some sums to see what I can justify spending

I agree. A V7II or III for similar money would be a far better and more fun prospect, and more reliable for being left for longer periods between rides (you mentioned weekend toy, so that's gonna by dry summer weekends, right?) but only an ersatz classic.

Yep.

I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

A nice, standard Monza would be cheaper and, in my opinion, much more stylish.

Anyway, how about something like this V11, which is presently on eBay?

I have no connection with the bike and can't vouch for its condition, but in my view it would be a much better place to stick £4500.
