Possible (very) short trip to the NE/Dales - suggestions?
Discussion
I’m toying with the idea of driving up to just nr Darlo Friday evening, then maybe staying over a little north of Kirby Lonsdale Saturday night.
Any recommendations for the area?
Quite happy to travel in any direction and a long day on Saturday doesn’t faze me, but I’ve got to mind my license so would value enjoyable/scenic over fast/heavily policed roads.
I suspect everywhere will be rather busy, so the avoidance of any real tourist hotspots would be a bonus.
Only other consideration is sh*t tank range (prob 120-130 max), but I’d hope that won’t be too much of an issue.

Follow the route I posted in the Lake District thread a month or so ago
[quote]This one is longer but has some of the best roads in the country (not county)

In fact don't do the Penrith to windermere bit, instead take the A6 back to kendal then the B6254 back to Kirkby Lonsdale
I am free over the weekend if you want a high speed tour of the area

Was cavorting round the dales/lakes last weekend. One of the roads we wanted to take out of Alton (we'd taken the road on your map from the Penrith direction) was closed. I wasn't the lead/navigator so I don't know if it was the next road on your map, but we ended up doing an about-turn in Alston and back-tracking. Just check the road(s) from Alston you want are open.

Jazoil nailed it with his route.
Other ones worth doing from Darlington would be :-
Darlington
Coulby Newham
Chop Gate
Helmsley (TT)
Thirsk
Northallerton
Darlington
Put each of them in as stops in to Google maps and you will have a decent couple of hours loop.
Alternative to above (or combine the 2)
Darlington
Coulby Newham
Chop Gate
Helmsley
Pickering
Scarborough- And do a lap of Olivers Mount.
Whitby
Scaling
Guisborough
Darlington
I can make myself available if you want an early morning guide as well.

not sure id bother with the Helmsley TT anymore - surface is poor, double white lines everywhere and largely 50mph and as found out lats week - busy
Its still a road worth riding if you have never ridden it before. It was part of my daily commute (Durham to Malton) every day for 2 years and I still ride it now for pleasure. There are a couple of sections which are double white lined, but they are only short sections and as the road isn't particularly busy you rarely get caught behind anything for any length of time.
The surface isn't too bad either, unless you're talking about the bits where they laid chippings down a month ago? I rode it the day after they laid them and I agree, those parts were treacherous, but when I was over there a week or so ago those loose chippings had all but disappeared.
It is undulating though, and twisty with a few sections where you can get airborne, especially approaching Chop Gate which some people might not like?

Would love to take you up on that offer, but have decided to pop north into Scotland on Saturday, maybe up the A68 for a bit then perhaps onto someB roads, before heading back down into the Dales.
Just got back from a super few days.
Mallory was nice enough, but never really felt like I got going with all the stoppages. Definitely one to visit again though.
Then a tedious ride up to nr Darlo following by a lovely trip up the A68 the next day. Turned at Jedburgh, onto Hawick then A7 down to Brampton, from where I pottered around some of the roads as I slowly travelled down to Settle for a curry and overnight nr Cowan Bridge.
Met up with Jazoli today for a morning ride around some more cracking little roads. Busy but worth it. Nice to know what decent roads are actually like to ride at a reasonable pace, not my usual plodding commute into London. I did crap myself once or twice though.
