I see from MCN that triumph have 'teased' a prototype of basically a fully faired Speed Triple.. Personally, considering how track-focussed the suspension is on the new triple, a Superbike, seems a near obvious choice. It may even lead to them softening the Speed Triple's suspension a touch and make it a touch more road compliant.

Just a thought. I'm not convinced Triumph will bring a Superbike into production though. They seem pretty resistant beyond the expensive Moto2 homage.

You're completely right that superbikes are a waste on the road, but that doesn't stop people wanting them. When BMW released the new S1000RR they couldn't make the M model fast enough to meet demand.

Shoot me if I'm mistaken here, but I'm sure I heard that the RR is going to be something more along the lines of a S1000XR rather than a full on superbike? I can't remember where I heard that though??

Personally I do hope it is a superbike.

It does look like a half fairing in the teaser video, so more likely sports tourer than sports bike I would have thought.

The current RS is about 30hp short of sports bike credibility, so unless Triumph have that in their pocket for their new triple engine, then I think a competitor for the S1000XR/Multistrada is more likely.

Speed Triple Fazer perhaps - Triumphs answer to a Superduke GT.

Personally can't see the appeal of jacked up road bikes, not sure how sales of the KTM GT compare to the BMW XR, guess Triumph may know.

Sports tourer? GT? They’re calling it an RR, it’s going to be a harder sports bike of some description surellllly??

While I don’t think it’s going to be a sports bike, I’m expecting a half fairing, more extreme bar position? Even clipons maybe? Few bits of carbon and a few fancy trinkets?

I’m curious to see the front of it.

The headlight looks like the MV SuperVeloce so I think it’ll be a bit of a retro looking sports bike…

I’m not surprised, it’s a great bike and it’s really well priced compared to the competition.

I'm sure there was an interview when the new speed triple was released with someone from Triumph who said they definitely weren't going to do a sportsbike as it would cost too much to develop and there wasn't the demand for it

Agreed but it does go to show there's still a huge market for superbikes regardless of the fact they're utterly pointless on the road.

The ‘Speed Triple Fazer’ is called a Tiger Sport - although granted, that has the old 1050 engine rather than the new 1200 from the Speed Triple, and is in a marginally lower state of tune.

As an owner of a 2013 Tiger Sport I’m quite hoping it will be something on those lines - although the RR designation suggests otherwise. I need a more upright style of bike as I have a weak left wrist (old skiing accident) which can’t really tolerate any weight on it, and certainly not with the vibrations and shocks from bumps in the road. Doesn’t mean I don’t want a bike with a meaty engine in it though, or only want off-road styling and suspension.

Huge market? I’d like to know how many were registered in 2020 I bet it’s a minuscule amount compared to a super naked. Let alone a more mainstream motorcycle. Unfortunately super sports have been a dying breed for some time now.

That's a fair point and I don't know the answer. I'd be interested to know though. I know I still see a huge number of sports bikes at bike meets, though I'll admit I am pretty blinkered as that's what I've always ridden.

A super naked doesn't make it into the top 10 sellers for 2020. A superbike does!

That’s just saying the s1000rr is the top selling super bike. You honestly think more s1000rr’s were sold than say a street triple or mt10?

I’m probably just talking crap here, however given the Triumph-BMW ranges:

Tiger 850 - F750
Tiger 900 - F850
Tiger 1200 - R1250GS
Rocket 3 - R18
Speed Triple - S1000R
Street Triple - F900R
Bonneville - RnineT
Scrambler - RnineT Scrambler/Urban/GS

…could this be a Triumph rival to the R1250RS? A half-faired, sporty-ish, practical affair?

They are utterly pointless on the road but you still see loads of them, I’ve given a lot of thought to track converting my R1M and getting something a bit less extreme for the road and just when I think I really want to do that I go out for a ride and can’t bring myself to do it yet.

They aren't pointless, they are fun. Thats the point of them and thats why people buy them.
