What ho chaps.

Old git here, gave up riding a few years back, but got the itch again last year and bought an old Guzzi Nevada (08 plate).

It's just coming up to renewal time for insurance and tax......but the tax costs more than the insurance, tax £96 , fully comp insurance £72.

How can this be ?

My wifes 1.0L turbo car is free, my 750cc NA bike is £96,both injected, catalytic converters and all that jazz, she does about 10K miles a year, my bike has covered just below 1K.

Plus many of us have multiple bikes / cars taxed at any one time

I always hoped they'd abolish it and stick it on fuel duty

Motorcycles don't fit with future road policy. I expect taxation to increase not decrease. Anyone for a safety tax? scratchchin

Right!? I'd love to get insurance for that little!

I just renewed mine and it's dropped few hundred down to £346 a year fully comp + bells and whistles.

It's pretty much the only benefit of getting older laugh

It's ridiculous. Like many I have multiple bikes, for the use they get it's hard to justify nigh on £100 a year, especially when so many cars are free or less than £30.

The last few years I taxed all of them for 6 months (some March to Aug and others April to September) except one bike that was taxed for the year.

This year I'm trying something different and doing it by DD, each bike will only get taxed for 2 months at £8/month and then Sorn'd meaning £16pa. Spreading the use so they all get some exercise and a tank or two of super unleaded fuel through them before their 10 month lay up. You just have to remember to Sorn on the last day of the month, DD just continues rolling so if you forget it takes payment on the first day of the month and if you sorn then you won't get that month back!

£96 is ridiculous for a bike, luckily I get my Guzzi's free now that it's turned 40 so I only pay for 2.

The silly part is I still have to tax it and if I forget, I'll get fined for no tax... confused

Getting older wasn't helping me with insurance. I was paying more, a lot more, for insuring a 300cc scooter now compared to insuring a GPz900R back when I was 20. I'm almost 60.

Moving to out to the outskirts of London has helped, as long as I keep renting a garage.

I dislike paying £96 for bike VED as much as the next man. But is it out of proportion with car VED which can be as high as £2245 (registration) or £600 (renewal)? scratchchin

I’ve often thought this too. Typical annual mileage of bigger bikes must be much lower than cars also ie. VED cost per mile on bikes will be really high.

Big bikes are pleasure machines like powerful cars. Paying 16% of their VED (£96 v £600) doesn't seem bad value especially as both 'weekend toys' are likely to clock similar mileages.

I agree - it's not bad value at all. Seems cheap to me (new to 'biking)

The reason your VED is cheaper than your insurance is because your insurance is an absolute steal!

For your wife's car tax, versus your bike tax, work out how much fuel duty she pays biggrin

Use your bike more to reduce the ppm wink
