Hello All,
Just thought I’d share this as it may help someone else out and save an accident waiting to happen (bear with the long story!).

Went to go to the shops on Monday on my 2017 Speed Triple, got kitted up, got the bike out. Went to start, does the usual needle sweep etc… nothing. I noted on the dash the rider modes were flashing and didn’t look familiar.
After a bit swearing, packed the bike up back in the garage again. Think you can probably tell the way this one is going to go by the title!

Looked online for similar symptoms, nothing really reassembling but likely a duff battery. Had a new battery last year so didn’t immediately think it was that but took the terminal leads off and gave it a charge for a few hours. Reconnected all and turned the key to start the bike, it started.
Was getting a bit late to go out for a ride, so thought I’d delay until following morning. Started up normally, all good. Rode off, all going fine until into about 2 miles into the journey. Bike cut out immediately just exiting a roundabout in second gear with the dash lighting up like a Christmas tree. Clutch in tried to restart, nothing. At this point an HGV was right behind me and fortunately he read the situation and stopped in time.

Pushed the bike to the side of the road with much swearing with the traffic backing up behind. Just by pure fortune where parked up was right outside a garage, went in to ask if they had any diagnostic kit, they said yep push it in and we’ll take a look. No error codes what so ever, weird.
They kindly said I could leave the bike at their premises while I arrange recovery (lesson learned! I now have recovery cover with AA). The guy at the garage would not take any cash at all for this, very generous of him.

Next day called the AA to go to the garage to take look and potentially take to a dealer for further diagnosis. Bike was still fooked and would not start, with the dash still lighting up like Blackpool illuminations. Arranged further transport to Carl Rosner Triumph dealer who very kindly arranged to take the bike in to diagnose.
Long and short of it, is that as you may have guessed from the title of this thread, it was the Datatool 4 alarm that was causing all this! I never liked the thing anyway since I got the bike as it always self arms and is generally a pain in the a@se. It has now been disabled and removed from the bike.

Reason for sharing really, is that this is potentially dangerous. For this to cause the engine just to cut dead on any stretch of road is not a good place to be but if it happened on a fast overtake, reasonable cornering speed or Mway speeds could have been a very different story.

If you have a Datatool 4 alarm might be worth checking out it’s functionality. Apparently there was a factory recall for some units but mine was not one of them. BTW my unit was factory fit.

Huge shout out to Brett at Pond Garage for helping me out and letting me store my bike at their premises overnight, top man! If it was left on the street for any length of time in Thornton Heath, it would not be there when I went to collect. Cannot thank you enough for this.

Final shout to the guys Adrian and Doug at Carl Rosner in Croydon for promptly fixing, mucho appreciation and top service as always.

Cheers,
Jrich123

Thanks for posting - as you say it could have been very dicey, that. Good to hear of top service from garages and about the kindness of strangers.

I'm thinking an alarmed disc lock may be the way forward.

Yep agree. Have an Abus disc lock for parking on the street amongst other items.

I had a very similar experience with a Yamaha XJ6 which had a datatool alarm fitted. Same experience with the bike completely cutting out on me whilst I was riding and then it wouldn't restart. Had to call recovery and get recovered home. Turns out mine was one of the recall units so they sent someone to replace it. Sold the bike shortly after (not related) but if I was keeping it, I would have just ripped it out. More hassle than they are worth.

Forgot that I had a Datatool (factory-fitted) on my Speed Four 10+ years ago. It was rubbish, and supremely annoying. Never bought a bike with an alarm since.
