Hi all,

Looking to understand what your route planning and navigation set up is?

Obviously Waze/Google maps are great for getting from A to B, but when you want to sit down, meticulously plan a route, kick out a .GPX (or similar) file and import to a turn-by-turn nav app, those are no good.

Can anyone recommend a setup please?

Thanks

I use myrouteapp to create gpx files.

I save/export these to TomTom & Garmin Satnavs on various bikes, as well as share them with friends to place on theirs when we tour together.
I also export them to the iPhone for use in the car with the TomTom GO nav app.
I also export them to the BMW Connect app on the iPhone which connect to the BMW TFT for turn by turn instructions on the TFT if not using the sat nav.

This gives me a track to follow exactly on the routes as created in myrouteapp.

If you have any questions about any of the above processes fire away.

Calimoto is pretty good.

More for bikes than cars, it can send you down some terrible roads.

Does let you plot your own path though, that side of it is excellent.

As above, Calimoto is good for what you are describing.

As above but also use BestBikingRoads to find interesting routes to the use in myrouteapp. I've just started using Waze on a phone but that doesn't have the route, only the destination (the Tomtom does the navigation) but it's useful for its real time alerts.

Thanks - I have the TomTom Go iPhone app but I'm struggling to see how to export a GPX file to it?

Used this a few times for multi-day trips and works well.

- Plan the route in Google Maps
- Save the url as a gpx file
- Email gpx to phone
- Open gpx in Beeline Moto app on phone
- Follow route using Beeline Moto

Obviously requires a Beeline Moto. Not as good as out and out sat. nav. on a phone but works well enough.

What iPhone do you have?
What app version of TomTom Go?

You need minimum of TomTom GO app version 2.6

Log in to 'My Drive' in web browser on your laptop/iPad/iPhone etc.
Save your gpx file from the device into TomTom 'My drive' on your laptop/ipad/iphone etc. (My Routes > Import GPX File)
In My routes, Select the file want to Sync & turn on 'Sync with my other devices'

Then on your iPhone GO app in 'TomTom services' you turn on 'MyDrive' to sync with the files stored in 'MyDrive' on the laptop etc.
Your GPX routes (that you've turned sync on for in MyDrive) will then appear available in 'My Routes' on your TomTom GO app.

Select the route & away you go.

Ah much obliged.

I hadn't enabled MyDrive sync in TomTom services! Good to go now, if a little disappointing that you can't import a GPX straight in from an iPhone.

Thanks again.

You only have to load it the once & switch on sync in Mydrive & then it will always appear in 'My Routes' on your iPhone as long as you are signed in, so it's no real hardship.
Having it in 'My Drive' means it's available in all your devices (I have more than one).
