No more ICE bikes from 2035
Discussion
After promising a consultation seems the government has just decided to ban ICE bikes in 2035

Not good news but not a surprise either. I think we're going to be the last to really enjoy ICE motorcycles so, I suggest we enjoy them in full.
There's no reason you couldn't be riding well beyond 70.

I'll be hitting my 70th birthday then.
Not sure I'll be in the market for a new bike, petrol engine or otherwise !
ICE will see me out ………….
We've had a number of Old Gits over 70 on our trips with the oldest being 79. He wanted to join the trip when he was 80 but getting travel insurance was an impossibility. Not sure I'll be in the market for a new bike, petrol engine or otherwise !

In 14 years I’m pretty sure electric bikes will be pretty sorted, could they have built in modes that give different engine configurations? V4 power delivery at the touch of a button? A built in vibrator (oo-er) to give the bike the feel of a engine? A gear lever even? Intercoms with different engine notes?
My ideas maybe a bit pie in the sky but the potential is there with modern technology isn’t it?

Thankfully there's a lot that can happen in fourteen years, electric bikes haven't really progressed beyond urban bikes at this time: there's significant issues over infrastructure in the sort of places bikers like to go, the ranges are very limiting and the weight dulls the fun.
I agree but I think it will be political as much as technology, unless the costs are kept in check And most important living standards maintained
There will be a massive backlash .

In 2019, motorcycles and mopeds made up just 0.4 per cent of all domestic UK greenhouse gas emissions. Cars and taxis were responsible for 55.4 per cent while heavy goods and light duty vehicles made up 31.6 per cent.
That's 87% of UK greenhouse gas emissions from Cars, trucks and bikes then. That doesn't sound right?black-k1 said:

Hopefully I'm still riding , but the bikes and cars I already own. There's no reason you couldn't be riding well beyond 70.

There is one coming within 6 months that’s going to have a 5 speed box, however the name eludes me at the minute. Think it might be a Horwin. My ideas maybe a bit pie in the sky but the potential is there with modern technology isn’t it?

My next door neighbour rides several times a week, and he's 82. There's no reason you couldn't be riding well beyond 70.
This headlong run towards EVs seems like the same effort towards diesels in the late nineties.
What about the manufacture and destruction/recycling of these things? Can't see that being 'net zero' to me.
But I guess I'll get a tirade from an EV convert suggesting I'm the antichrist for asking this question, soon.

Until I can get 160+ miles from a single charge I won't be getting an electric bike as I simply won't be able to commute to and from work on it.
I think the headlong charge for EV is a bit short sighted given the lack of infrastructure and fledgling technology. I've not heard much from the 'every lamp-post will be converted to EV charger port' brigade in a while, and even that isn't a great solution.
So what it boils down to on the charging front is how many people have garages / drives across the country, but particularly in the south east. And how long will charges take in various scenarios (eg. quick charge at a garage I;ve heard about 30mins, or full charge at home on standard port 8 hours).
For the port roll out scenario, and taking my cul-de-sac in as an example - there are three residents car parks, each covered by one lamppost light and capable of taking between 12 and 16 cars in each; no-one has a drive, and no-one has a garage due to the 'side on to road' layout of each section; how, if all these ICE vehicles are replaced by EV, are they going to get charged?
As for me, it makes no difference as I can park in my back garden and have my bike hooked up to trickle charge every night; but again, if it cant do at least 160 miles on a single charge, then its a huge no go for me.
The 'are they greener?' question is a good one considering the lack of recycling at present and generally high environmental inpact to product. But that's not my bag so I've not read into it (although I did get sent this that made me giggle)
But being positive; it will definitely be interesting to see how things play out over the coming years.
I just hope that it doesn't make motorcycling prohibitively time consuming or overly expensive since it is currently MUCH, MUCH cheaper in time and money by bike than any other alternative.

Early season from waht I recall - but immediately came to mind with your tron bike post!Back on topic: been looking for a moped for yet another of my other halfs siblings who turn 16 soon - didnt realise they had rolled out EV ones at the 50cc band already! Bloody expensive though and the weight looks nearly double a conventional ICE moped.
