Greenlaning Clothing Suggestions Please
Discussion
I haven’t been greenlaning for 20+ years so virtually nothing I have fits any more.
I used to only go out in the winter so all the clothing I had was thick / heavy with body armour (with shoulder / elbow protection) under my jacket which had removable protection and some reasonably heavy textile trousers with hip / knee padding.
I’m now probably as likely to go out in summer and maybe just some occasional road riding / site seeing but wonder if I may boil in my current jacket (the one bit that still fits).
Looking for some advice and suggestions please, will I boil in similar trousers in the summer or are they OK and whichever any suggestion much appreciated, I’ll probably use my current jacket in the winter but what else would others wear mid-summer … I’m thinking, I’m full body armour with a jersey or something over the top or is this not enough?
Generally I wasn’t to keep the cost down as much as possible as have just bought the bike, helmet and goggles, I know which boots and gloves I’m going to get and the costs a bit like a run-away train at the moment.
Any help / suggestions much appreciated.

What boots, helmet etc have you gone for?
I'm just starting out with a bit of road to off road riding (can't call it green lining in Scotland cause we don't officially have any). At the moment I'm using a road textile jacket with shoulder, elbow and spine protection, a pair of kevlar lined cargos with armour, an ancient pair of trials boots and my road helmet. I ventured out last Saturday when it was nice and I was baking.
Ideally I'd dress like a cool neon MX power ranger but I'm more paranoid about sliding along the tarmac getting to the trails than I am falling off on the trails so that ain't happening. Winter will be a bit easier as I'll just go full textile. I was planning on getting some MX boots but someone told me I want something waterproof with a grippy sole. So I was looking at adventure boots until someone else said they don't offer enough protection.
Not easy getting versatile kit for this dual purpose.

Boots I've ordered are Forma TX Terrain Endoro Boots which seem to be a good cross between the 2 and goggles are O'Neal Two Face. The helmet / goggles are actually coming with the bike as he's decorated it with the same decals (complete rebuild from scratch pic attached) but it's a L2 Subverta MX470.I'm just starting out with a bit of road to off road riding (can't call it green lining in Scotland cause we don't officially have any). Re waterproof boots .... all the research I did, if they were waterproof they seemed to offer less protection (unless you want to spend a shed load) and loads pf people said go for the better protection and buy some waterproof sealskinz socks. I dug out some bits from when I green laned 25 years ago and I have 2 pairs of waterproof over socks so I guess my old boots weren't waterproof either but they were brilliant.
If you're just starting out, it took me 3 rides to realise off road is different to on where you lean with the bike, instead you stand on the pegs and let the bike go where it wants and you stay upright / cenrtral ..... I used to call it either being the puppet on strings of the rag doll.
Make sure you have proper off road tyes as well or you'll just slide every which way and never enjoy it.

Enduro gear for summer Adventure stuff for winter or extra layers , MX boots is a must forget about grippy soles and water proof , if it’s really wet use water proof socks , avoid over the boot pants if they don’t get hung up on the pegs they will burn on the exhaust on most four strokes. The Klim Dakar stuff is good ..I used to only go out in the winter so all the clothing I had was thick / heavy with body armour (with shoulder / elbow protection) under my jacket which had removable protection and some reasonably heavy textile trousers with hip / knee padding.

I was out on Sat, 30 degrees but ok if you kept moving, the worst thing was the dust and the flies in your helmet (most of us wear LS2 Pioneer but it was too dusty / hot to keep the visor down)
Most were wearing MX gear - boots, knee protectors, chest/elbow/ shoulder/back armour and MX jersey.
The issue is then trousers - some wear road textiles others risk it in MX jeans some wear armoured shorts

Why does nobody make an in boot motocross style trouser with aramid or kevlar lining and pockets for armour? The Klim Dakar pants come close but it looks like they're discontinued. I'm I odd for thinking that would be a useful, versatile piece of kit?

I suspect green laning with the requirement for road and off road use is a very limited market and unlike motocross most of us doing it aren't spending a fortune or bothered about brandsEdited by nunpuncher on Tuesday 20th July 10:51
It was discussed recently and I think the answer was mesh trousers
