New bike - which Triumph?? Thruxton, Speed Twin, Other?
Discussion
Hi All
Would like a new (to me) bike that is fun to ride and sporty, without needing to do 200mph everywhere. If it could handle the odd track day once / twice a year, that would be a bonus - but doesn't need to be in the fast group - happy to wobble around at the back.
Needs to be ok on the commute into London - so be ok through traffic lights and 20mph limits - or at least sufficiently fun that I can take the pain and suffering of this once in a while.
I also have a Yamaha Xmax 300 scooter so I have some practical bases covered if need be. My last bikes was an '07 R1 - but the best part of 10 years ago. It had its place, but I am not sure how much I was really enjoying it if I am being honest - fuelling was not great, not much torque etc. The scooter has been a revelation tbh - great fun.
Triumph seem to have quite a few interesting bikes - Speed twin (+ new model coming out), Thruxton (would want the higher clip ons) - even some of the T120's look ok when customised. The Trident actually gets great reviews and looks decent.
A friend loves his Street Triple RS. I feel the need for a Triumph experience.
I am going to the dealer tomorrow to kick the tyres - but I am not really sure where to start with this - anyone had experience of these bikes and recommendations or otherwise?

I had Thruxton R which was fabulous. Really easy to ride with lots of torque and good handling.
Downsides if you have the fairing kit the low clip ons put weight on your wrists which is fine for a weekend toy rather than daily. And it was a bugger to keep clean the polished alloy cases and rims need attention after every wash or clean as they mark up very easily. I've seen daily bikes with badly corroded cases and rims through lack of care.
Was a great bike though, sounded fab and fast enough without being warp speed mental

I have had a few Triumphs recently. Started with the Street Twin 900 and swopped this out for a Bobber 1200. Not for me…….
So bought a Thruxton R, such a beautiful machine. Could look at it for hours and spend time ‘fettling’. But on a long ride it made my wrists ache so much, and this is the first bike I have experienced a ‘tank slapper ‘. Really scary !
So, chopped this out and bought a Tiger 800 XRT with full pannier luggage.
Best bike I have owned. That triple engine is a dream, mine has an Arrow pipe fitted and sounds wonderful.
Has cruise control, rider modes, heated seats and grips…..great value for money.
If you get the chance, try the new Tiger Sport 850. Waiting for it’s release here in Thailand.

I can vouch for the street triple! I had a 675 and now have a 765 RS, as a do it all bike I can’t think of anything better, lightweight, 120bhp, great ergonomics, amazing sound. Best middleweight around!
I’m looking at selling mine if interested? 2018, 4.5k miles, just MOT’d, immaculate. And you say about London, I’m in Kent.

Have ridden the 765RS and it's quite a rapid machine with great handling, you wouldn't need much more than that tbh.I’m looking at selling mine if interested? 2018, 4.5k miles, just MOT’d, immaculate. And you say about London, I’m in Kent.
Reference the Thruxton R tank slapper comment above mine used to waggle it's head quite a lot when you gave it large, but it wasn't in need of a damper I don't think.
I have a Speed Twin and for my needs it's perfect, it's great for just cruising around on but if you want some fun it has a lot of grunt regardless of what gear you're in. There's some useful upgrades with the new 2021 version with the USD forks and radial brakes and a bit more power, though visually (in my opinion) it's gone backwards a bit, another bike on my shortlist was a Z900RS but the Speed Twin just felt 'right' somehow.
