Was told when I bought the bike that the battery running low had cause the HISS to kick in and so the key needed recoding to the ECU. Dealer knew a guy that could sort it for £195. I've charged the battery and given it a go to see the state of play, the fuel pump primes which I believe would not happen if the HISS was active. The FI light is on but the bike does nothing when I crank it. It's been sat for quite a while, could it just be that it it's doing an 'extra long' prime because it's been sat? I didn't want to leave it going for longer than 4 or 5 seconds as I don't want to risk dumping too much fuel into the cylinders and causing any damage.

Fuel pump priming won't be putting any fuel into the cylinders, that only starts to happen once the engine is cranking over, its priming the system ready to start.
Not cranking is the issue you have, checked feed to starter motor?

Edit

when you say it does nothing when you crank it ..... is it turning over and not starting, or nothing happening when you press the button?

Have you got fuel in it.

Start with the basics; have you checked the kill switch?

When I press the starter button the whirring changes pitch slightly but no other signs of life. The battery isn't fully charged as I was a little impatient to begin tinkering, but it's got some decent voltage in it. Haven't check the starter motor yet.
I did think this morning that maybe I was being stupid, but I have checked and there is fuel in the tank. Kill switch is set to run, and it's in neutral

On closer inspection of the manual, the HISS light is on the tacho, not on the LCD screen, so it is showing as activated. But I'm confused how it would be priming if the immobilizer is active?

Exclude the battery first, from what you describe it really is most likely here. Voltage across the terminals will not tell you if it is healthy or not.

Get some jump leads, try starting with your car battery.

We have signs of life! After borrowing the battery from my car, the starter motor is attempting to turn the engine. The fuel pump is still continually priming and the HISS light is staying on. If it's an immobilizer issue would the bike not even try to turn over?

Try cranking for a good 20-30 secs and see if it catches.

If not take a plug out after an attempt, if it smells like fuel you know it’s fuelling.

Then test for spark on the plug.

If the carbs are empty the pump will run until pressure is built up, is fuel getting to the pump? Carb or fi?

How long has the bike been sitting?

Bit of a dead thread but thought I'd wrap this up in case people in the future stumble across this. I appreciate everyone's help. Turns out the issue was the simplest and most expensive (joy).

The ECU was faulty, looked like it had been worked on before and the chip that holds the info for the key was corrupted. Fantastic guy at bike decoders tried to fix the existing ECU for me but no luck. Managed to find a replacement at a reasonable price and recode it for me. The fuel pump keeps priming, but at least the damn thing starts now. I suspect fuel pressure regulator might be the issue for the priming.

Glad you got it sorted. Had a similar issue on my Step Son's 2007 Corsa. Priming etc. I was clueless up till that point, was swapping relays but nothing.

Ended up being the key needed to be recoded as the ECU/immobiliser didn't recognise it.

Well done for sorting it. Pain in the arse but cheaper than a new bike I'm sure.
