He wants an R1 but that won't happen at 17!

Anyone know a quick-ish 125cc he could get, budget used about £3K? His tick boxes in order are performance, looks and then handling. Thanks. He's not bothered about kit level or price.

Surely it has to be an R125 then?

None of them are quick, they all have at most 14bhp and gains are impossible (see the 44T GSXR125 JHS Vid), an old 2T would be the best bet if ultimate performance is important, but good luck finding a decent one!

2 stroke RS125 or Cagiva mito. They can be restricted to be legal but it’d be hard to find one and very boring...

When I was an instructor we had a MT125 delivered to us for some lad doing his CBT on his 17th birthday (no pressure eh?). Compared to the CB125s we were using it was a rocket ship! Get him to do his CBT on the school's bike and they'll all feel quick.

I think that you're looking for the best example you can find. They're mostly owned by hormonal teenagers after all...I'd get a new Lexmoto LXR125 for £2,500 myself.

I’ve just bought Mrs Fb a Suzuki GSX-S125 and paid £3000 for an 11 month old bike with 2500 miles , FSH and 2 years manufactures warranty left . I went for the S over the R as I just felt the fairings were an extra expense when/if she drops it.

Cracking little thing for a 125 with a 4 valve twin cam water cooled engine producing 15hp with a genuine 80mph possible. We had 75 out of hers and wasn’t quite flat out yet . Digital dash, ABS, fuel injection, decent width rear tyre, massive front brake all make it ride lovely.

This thread has brought back some memories for me in the late eighties trying to choose a used Sports 125.

The Yamaha TZR125 was favourite followed by the Honda NS125 and Suzuki RG125. Nothing else was in consideration. Happy carefree days rofl

There’s a new bike shop opened in the High Street of one of the neighbouring towns.

I had a nose in to see what it was about and was chatting to the owner.

It’s all Chinese 125’s as that’s his target market.

He had quite a few in stock and I was surprised how nice they looked.

He has sports bikes, cruisers and even a GS clone.

Personally I wouldn’t touch them but anything that gets kids onto biking is a good thing with the caveat that they’re not put off through poor quality.

This is the Lexmoto 125 he had in stock.

Lexmoto's and the like are all well and good (the one about looks fantastic) but they lose value like a stone and will be worth nothing at 3 years old, the equivalent Japanese bike whilst costing more to purchase will retain at least 75% of its value if looked after and not typically ruined by a teenage owner.

Modern 125s from the big four are made in China in the same factories as the Chinese bikes.

Component quality has much reduced too, it won't be long until the two merge in price, quality and spec.

True, although when you're starting at 50% the starting price of the Japanese bikes it's a much more affordable prospect.

Lexmoto in particular are also apparently upping their quality too, so you might get more back at the end of your stint than you'd think.

Plus won't all teenagers ruin a 125 anyway?

He's probably better saving his money and getting his R1 (or probably R6) sooner if he can. I'd get something cheaper than a fake R1. Otherwise I'd go down the 2 stroke route

If I could go back I'd definitely get an RS125 instead of a CG125 and kept it.

Sadly all the modern sports 125cc bikes look a bit of a joke, to my eyes. All show and no go and look far too small under a modern teen.

I like the look of the Mutt Motorcycle 125s. I think they are Suzuki 125 engines made in a Chinese factory then they come to the UK and bits taken off and added to give them a bit of a rugged old Brit Bike feel.

Save the sports bike until he's got some experience and some money, plus hopefully some NCD.

I've got a 125 2 stroke but he wants something he can use daily for the commute as well as for some weekend fun. My Mito is far too focussed and highly strung and expensive on fuel and oil for him.
I think the Yamaha 125 mentioned will be ideal. Looks good to my eyes.

Honda Grom, an acceptable 125cc that anyone can have fun riding.

Not sporty looks and actually quite slow (at least with the air cooled engine).

Also an unrestricted 125 2 stroke like the Mito will be well over the 15bhp CBT or A1 license power limit...

I'd be astonished if there were any restricted ones left...

Complete rubbish every Honda is produced in a factory owned and operated by Honda even the one in China that produces children's bikes not road bikes.
Some manufacturers like Kawasaki have rebadged some scooters but that is all. The Chinese buy the rights to old bikes but the quality has been dire in the past , it is improving but still leaves a lot to be desired even on the likes of Lexmoto who are better than a lot
Hence the resale values, Im selling used 2 year old CB125Rs for nearly new money great riding 125 one of the best and safest there is out there.
