I just watched a YouTube video which was filmed somewhere in Manchester where two dirt bike riders looked like they were eyeballing the rider and apparently gesturing to them. The rider took off at speed taking some calculated risks and fortunately finished their journey without coming to harm. My question is what measures are you permitted to take in the eyes of the law and at what point does any leniency end?

In a situation like this the CPS probably wouldn't try and prosecute, and if they did then they could always use a duress defence, but that will involve the biker convincing the court that they feared for their life, and not just their bike.

Unless she's auditioning for Hollyoaks she was clearly spooked, but the video didn't really show anything except the one bike coming not very close in another lane...

Why "moped" OP? I didn't see any mopeds.

Thought a description of a situation would be good enough for someone to comment. I didn't want to discuss an individual, just the situation.

I don't think there's a single blanket answer. Too many variables.

I wonder if there's a post on a forum somewhere where a dirt bike rider says he and his mate were riding through Manchester when they saw someone on a bike where their loose ruck-sack strap looked like it might get caught in the bikes wheel. (Or something similar) They were trying to attract the riders attention when the rider took off like a scalded cat, taking some big risks on questionable maneuvers and riding like a loon.

I'm not saying the two on the dirt bikes weren't up to no good but did we actually see anything that said they weren't just out for a ride, other than the young ladies possible paranoia?

Exactly what I was thinking.

Should she have waited at some lights to find out how friendly they are?

I'd get mugged all the time if I rode in a city, I hardly ever use my mirrors.

Only she can answer that.

She thought they were up to no good. I don't doubt that was her belief. That doesn't mean they were up to no good. When she rode off, she spent a lot of time looking backwards. If sh'e been involved in an accident in that time, would it have been right to use the justification that there were bike thieves behind her chasing her?

The OP asked "what measures are you permitted to take in the eyes of the law and at what point does any leniency end". The point I was making was that there are always two sides to a story and that it's never likely to be clear cut as to what the "right" answer is.

I went past a pair of guys wearing black hoodies, black helmets, two up on a TMax and they were very obviously scoping out targets. Thankfully the Crossrunner is either not remotely desirable or looks too much like an NC750 which presumably is also not desirable. I was thoroughly on edge for a while so I can understand the nerves.

Whole thing is bks. She is headed for the Mancunian Way with little in front of her where she can give it serious large to get away. There are also numerous glide offs the Mancunian Way. But she turns off the A635M onto Deansgate Interchange where she is highly likely to get baulked. Just so happens to be the way she would usually take to get to Williams BMW where she works. It's cr@p made up for her youtube channel.

Mountain meet molehill.

I was expecting one of the riders to cut in front of her to try and make her stop. As far as I can tell she saw a couple bikes and panicked for some reason.

That's a good point.

I once beeped a car and pointed as the boot was slightly open and some stuff was falling out. They just gave me the finger hehe

I was thinking "oh crap, not up here now" until I saw it. Much ado about nothing.

And to be honest - if they were chasing it would take a very very handy rider on a streetbike to get away from some council scallies on enduros/crossers in heavy traffic. They pop from the womb, conveyor-belt like, seemingly born with the ability to do huge jumps and loft massive mingers that would put Travis Pastrana to shame, clad only in a hoodie, trainers, and CE approved protective grey jogging pants.

Anything for youtube views. Perhaps hoping the news will pick it up and link to it for more.
