Biking bargains - new project R1
Discussion
Sat idly browsing Facebook marketplace as I often do, looking at ways of spending money I don't have, on things (bikes) I don't need.
Up popped a 2005, 5vy R1 wearing track clothes but still with a plate and V5 that has "an electrical issue, 5 minute job to fix"
It was only about 45 minutes away which living where I do in the southwest makes you practically neighbours because of how long it takes to get any where!
I turned up yesterday evening to view it and could tell it had been sat a while and the chap had originally swapped it for a cbr600 engined quad bike solely for the purpose of putting the R1 engine in his Raptor 700 quad. He was a nice enough young lad but plainly didn't know much about bikes
The bike was up for £1000 but it was a bit tattier than I anticipated and it had zero paperwork apart from a logbook but it HPI'd as clean so bid him £800...he accepted.
It has a WP race rear shock
Maxton stickers on the forks making me thing its potentially got some kind of upgrade there but could just have been serviced by them.
Harris rear sets
Micron exhausts
I've got a feeling the electrical issue is a flat battery but time will tell.
I'm intending to do a short YouTube series, maybe 2 or 3 videos but we'll see of the process of buying and try to sell a bike for a profit (which should be easy providing its not completely borked)
Apologies for the poor quality pics, lighting in the garage isn't the best yet and I only moved in 2 weeks ago so still yet to sort it!

Would love to watch the YouTube video you propose.
Another PH’er picked up a cheap one of these a few months ago.
Cheers, I'll post up when it's done. It'll be on my channel which is here> https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6E73vZAm3LBIU72h...Another PH’er picked up a cheap one of these a few months ago.
I remember seeing the thread from the other gent but couldn't find it on a search! I'm sure he paid approx £1k too

Great stuff!
Hope it serves you well.. bargains are still out there to be had - just need to be in the right place at the right time!
Cheers Cueball! Yeah it was very much a case of being fortunate, I've missed out on plenty of bargains over the years. It's just timing...someone else was lined up to have this one but then messaged the seller to say they didn't want it. Lucky me...maybe Hope it serves you well.. bargains are still out there to be had - just need to be in the right place at the right time!

Following with interest - that's a bargain and then some with any luck
You're PH name raised a laugh Reminds me of the long legged mac daddy guy! I'll try to update this thread reasonably often and get the first video out this month. Fingers crossed I don't unearth anything serious

No luck needed. Even if the engine is toast OP is still not out of pocket.
Agree, I think with the shock, forks/yokes, rear sets and exhaust I'd make my money back or close too if it was a lost cause. Thankfully they are all relatively sort after too but I'd prefer it to stay as a full bike. I'll know more when I pop out to the garage this afternoon and give it a wash and take a look under the fairings

What's that sat to the right of the R1, looks very interesting
Tool cabinet. HTH. Okay, what is the bike sat to the right of the R1 in the garage, left of the R1 as you look at the picture.
smart arse
To the right of the R1 is a ZXR 400 without any of it's clothes on! It's my other half's race bike and hopefully we'll get the fairings fitted over the next few weeks, then it can go off for a radiator to be made up
- R1 news... going to check if charging the battery for 24 hours means it will start.
Also on removing the battery (and by proxy having to remove the tail fairing) I found a power commander and when removing the belly pan for cleaning I think the micron exhaust extends to a full system! Not just link pipes and cans...what a result!

Are you Tom Double-Barrel? I saw that name asking something on FB recently and I thought I recognised it?
Aye that'll be me! Was it the R1 group of practical sportsbikes you saw it on?lazybike said:
At the risk of stating the obvious..do the numbers match?
Fair point given the price but yep, engine and frame numbers are present and match the HPI report (which was clear). The chap selling openly admitted he didn't know much about bikes and was more interested in quads. There's nothing about the process so far to make me suspect anything other than a genuine, if slightly unaware, seller.
