I think Triumph have done it again, the new Trident looks smart, and seems very competitively priced at £7149, being a Triumph it’s pretty much guaranteed to ride nicely too.

Triumph as a brand seem to have it sussed these days, certainly in my opinion, making well made, good looking bikes that are great to ride at sensible prices.

Keep up the good work I say

Just looking at that on MCN, first thoughts are:

80HP seems a bit low but would like to know torque figures
Are the grabrails on the one at the back optional?
Not sure about the styling, suppose it's okay, quite like the LCD dash though, very nice.
Can I get a rack?

I bet it looks and feels smaller in the flesh. Good “stepping stone” bike perhaps? Seems very good value for money.

Grab rails are optional

Oh. That looks good. I know it's not retro but that would be fighting for space with a RE interceptor in my garage.

I watched the 44 Teeth and MCN videos earlier. Not in showrooms til Jan. 21. 10,000 mile service intervals.

I'd want a proper front mudguard something like on that 752S Benelli. The pricing of that Triumph takes the shine off of the Benelli 752S being a lot of metal and brand bling, brakes, suspension and tyres for the price.

£2,000 more than a Pre-Reg SV650 it's a tempting price.

Looks great to me. Slightly more than the Z650 and SV650 but cheaper than the CB650R. If I was in the market for this type of bike it would certainly be on the shortlist. Look forward to hearing the ride reviews. 80bhp is plenty for the road and it's light bike.

It’s 40% more than the SV which is still made in Japan vs Thailand for the Triumph.

Triumph looks way overpriced to me. Royal Enfield do this type of bike well at a much lower price to.

Claimed 64 N/m for torque with Triumph claiming 90% of that figure from 3,600 rpm to 9,750 rpm (says Statham narrated 44 Teeth video).

64 N/m is same as current SV650 I think.

I think Triumph have nailed it with this, great looking bike. The only thing I’m not keen on is how they have mounted the rear plate over the wheel. I guess there will be an aftermarket kit to move it to the ‘traditional’ position though.

Great looking bike. This would be a great bike for general local commuting and bobbing out on.

To get the rear plate where it legally needs to be if they took it from the rear seat it would look even worse!

Where a bike/car/food blender/space probe is manufactured is utterly irrelevant in the 21st century. If you looked on the side of the box that a bit of Japanese Hi-Fi was packed in a few years back in it would say 'Manufactured in S Korea' and right next to it 'Engineered in Japan'

It's the R & D, tooling and quality control costs that dictate a large chunk of the price of everything these days, the Triumph is 40% more mainly due to the engineers in Hinckley expecting a wage worthy of their skills.

The Triumph also has more engineering in it and inflation in real terms will have pushed every single cost of manufacture up.

Suzuki wrote the R & D and tooling elements out of the SVs pricing years ago so the sticker price reflects manufacturing costs and not much else which is why it's so cheap.

The Royal Enfields are cheaper still because the design dates back to what, the 50s or 60s and they are built in India where labour is even cheaper.

I looked at the Royal Enfields at the bike show last year and as an engineer everything about the bike said 'built to a price' looking at Triumph and the other European & Japanese bikes it's clear that they are built to much higher standards on much more modern machinery.

Thx for that, much appreciated and it does indeed look at least equivalent to the SV650, nice flat torque curve suggests it might have more bottom end.

So that leaves my questions as:

Can I get a rack?
And MPG, 60+ would be nice please smile

I didn't see a rack on the official accessories.

The grab handles are £135. The official round engine casing covers are yet to be priced.

It’s far from utterly irrelevant. People don’t buy on logic, particularly for what might be considered an aspirational purchase.

Taking a very simple example there are loads of people willing to pay a premium for a made in Japan vs made in Korea but otherwise identical Seiko watch.

Love it. Styling is lovely and clean, engine will be good. Would definitely be buying one of these if I hadn't bought the Honda equivalent early this year.

Was hoping for power to be around the 90-95 a la the CB but I suppose it starts treading on the Street Triple's toes.

Looking forward to seeing what Suzuki do with the new SV, hopefully major changes.

Dunno why anyone bothers with the Z650, it's at least 7 or 8hp down on it's competitors (which is a lot when you don't have much to start off with) and up to 27hp down in some cases. Around the same price as most, too. That said, can't remember ever even seeing one so maybe they don't bother.

Can I also get clip ons and a fairing? If so I would be queuing up outside my local dealer when it goes on sale. Would be a right giggle on the back roads!

Why? It costs £5k, has a reputation for being bullet proof, v-twin character and in all likelihood will be at least as much fun, and probably more on a backroad than the Trident.
