Any watching Long Way Up?
Discussion
I loved Long Way Round and Long Way Down, so I was really excited for the new series.
Well... after a couple of episodes I’m finding it really hard to watch..
Firstly, watching them do absolutely EVERYTHING on smartphones all the time is the inevitable march of progress, but seems to take a huge chunk of the ‘adventure’ out of it.
But so far, much much worse is the choice to do it on electric bikes. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of the idea of an electric bike but they’re making for depressing watching. 90% of the program so far is fking about with poor charging infrastructure and obsessing about range anxiety.
No doubt it’ll get better as they move forward into more heavily populated areas, but compared to the earlier series on the BMWs it just seems so joyless.
In the first two series, the bikes seemed to represent total freedom, robustness and versatility. No wonder BMW sold so many GS off the back of it.
The electric Harleys just seem like they’re crushing the boy’s spirits. It’s so disappointing - the guys just don’t seem to be having any fun.
On the petrol bikes they’re were doing hundred of miles a day, often hooning and nobbing about. On the electric bikes, they’re resorting to 70 miles on a stint and often at really low speeds to eek out the distance. Going to be a miserable 15,000 miles at this rate!
Anyone else?
Fingers crossed for the rest of the series.

I watched episodes 1 and 2 this evening.
I’m quite into it tbh. I think the EV choice was inspired to mix things up.
Maybe I’m just being a misery! I’m quite into it tbh. I think the EV choice was inspired to mix things up.
It’s just that, for the first two series, it always felt that they were able to do it because of the bikes, but this time it’s more in spite of the bikes.
That said - the first episode where they’re working with Harley Davidson and (even more impressive) Rivian for the 4X4s was pretty impressive.

Won't be watching it though. Don't have Apple TV
ThisI've only watched the trailer and it seemed decent right up until they mentioned it was on electric bikes. I know times are changing and things move on but it seems like it would take away from the experience. At least Ewan won't get petrol in his eye!
Long way round worked so well because they originally was going to do it on their own and film it, things spiralled from there and it turned out like a nice personal, connecting, genuine adventure series. Claudio was also very underrated, he really added to the series and needs as much recognition as the other two. I guess we're not going to get him this time...
This looks like a big budget apple TV of endless faff finding a socket. Or they could just take a generator with them
I'll give it a watch if I find a way to do it, I don't have apple TV..... But these are my first impressions.

On the plus side.. Claudio is back! (But as far as I can see from dash-glimpses, he’s on something petrol powered). Let’s hope he keeps it rubber-side down a bit more this time Long way round worked so well because they originally was going to do it on their own and film it, things spiralled from there and it turned out like a nice personal, connecting, genuine adventure series. As for the generators.. they’ve had to call in a lorry with a Diesel generator on the back twice already, and I’m only on the third episode!

Ah, I stand corrected, I should actually watch it before commenting! As for the generators.. they’ve had to call in a lorry with a Diesel generator on the back twice already, and I’m only on the third episode!
Not sure I can summon up enough interest.
I think the problem may be that I can now watch self-filmed actual adventures, such as a young woman riding an Enfield Himalayan solo from India to the Netherlands (see Itchy Boots on YouTube), and a couple of actors doing the same thing with corporate sponsorship and a support crew isn't at all remarkable.

I watched Boorman being interviewed on the latest Fully Charged, he said they can do 150 miles a day with a charge off the Rivian taking an hour. I think they crack this later in the series?
But then didn't he say they did 230 miles on the first day? It was pretty hard to follow what he was on about.Gassing Station | Biker Banter | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
