Could anyone recommend a number plate supplier for bike plates?

It’ll be going on a fairly small tail tidy and I’d hoped to have a legal plate that didn’t have as much wasted space as the ones that came from the dealer.

If it matters, it’ll be a 6 character plate.

Thanks!

I used this chap last year after lots of research for a fully legal smaller plate for a five digit plate.
https://www.jdmplates.co.uk/
He started doing plates for import cars and moved onto bike plates. Understands what is legal and how small you can go legally depending on the plate so the plates are fully BS AU 145 compliant (As bike plates don’t have a stated minimum size like cars, but I’m sure you know that already). very help and good service.

Used them loads of times, if you order from them call them up and ask for cutdown plate, no border and 11mm spacing between letters if you have 1’s or i’s.

Also ask to put the bs logo in the middle at the top so it can be hidden it you mount it high.

Get them to send you a proof to okay it and done.

If you put the BS at the top the number plate does comply. You might as well just buy a “show plate” and have done with it.

There is no stated minimum size of plates for bikes or cars, but I'm sure you know that already.

Yes but we are talking about Motorbikes confused
(I’m trying to help the guy, and the fact that motorcycle plates have a lot more flexibility being on two lines, smaller standard font extra etc etc. But heh ho thumbup )

Thanks all - looks like JDM though pricey are the best bet.

Most others stick to the ‘standard’ size, so it’d have to be a show plate which doesn’t appeal.

7x5 show plate, £12 off eBay, never had a problem with the quality nor the legality (putting a ‘standard’ plate back on for MOT purposes) in the 8yrs I had one on the old bike and just got one for the new steed...

Though presumably it doesn’t have the correct marking or lettering from the provider to make it legal.

That’s just not a risk worth taking for an extra 30 quid or so (the points would cost me much more in insurance)

Another vote for JDM plates. He knows what he's doing and will make you the smallest legal plate possible with your combination of numbers/letters.

No affiliation with him whatsoever, just a happy customer.

Has anyone ever had grief from the law for this?

I could be wrong, but I didn't think number plate offences like that came with points.

That said, it's always a good idea to keep things as legal as possible, especially if you're going to be comitting other offences like speeding.

No points. Fines of up to 1k. And they are repeatable.

Also they are a 'Major' MOT failure.

I just use a 8x6 show plate off eBay for a tenner. Never had a problem.

Got a 30 quid fine about 10 years ago on a road/track car I had at the time which had a ridiculously small sticker number plate, stuck to the front bumper.

I don't think anyone does the 90s style st font plates on bikes anymore do they? That is just asking for a fine.

Ordered a JDM plate. I’d probably have been fine with a show plate but I didn’t want to end up with a roadside chat with a copper and that influencing the direction of the conversation.

My bike is loud from the factory, it’s flash, and I don’t ride slowly, so it’d be just one more thing...

I realise that’ll be more cautious than most.

I appreciate all the help!

They mention 'legal size, spacing and all necessary details.'

Technically that's correct, though from what I understand the size is dictated by the correct lettering, spacing and details, simply saying 'his is smaller than ours' wouldn't cut it.

That said, that plate was ridiculous - it didn't meet a single one of the requirements (except perhaps the colour).

Seems they're pretty hot on it though. For example, this one is probably much closer to legal:

Hi all,

It's great to see that we're being mentioned around some different forums and that people are happy with our product and service!

if you have any questions feel free to message us directly on the website; we have a 'contact us' section although I will try and be as active as possible on these forums.

With regards to the OP, for a 6 digit motorcycle plate, the smallest legal size would be 174mm wide x 164mm high. However, the plate can be made smaller in terms of width if there is a 1 or an I on both rows.

With all of our smaller plates you should receive a small 4'x6' certificate that you can keep in the seat compartment or motorcycle jacket which highlights our company information and all of the legislation we comply with for if you ever do get stopped and questioned.

Any questions, feel free to ask!

Cheers,
Carl.
