Just read something on Visordown, apparently Anthony Gobert has been badly beaten up in his own home. Story goes that he was in a restaurant when someone approached him and asked if it was him, he said Yes but I'm eating, so they came back again later and started a fight and he clobbered one of them. Went home, next thing a gang of blokes smashed his door down and set about him with baseball bats.

Extent of his injuries not known although pretty severe, apparently he'll live but there's no word as to what sort of recovery he'll make.

Prior to this the last I heard of him was that he had taken to stealing cash from OAPs.

Sad story all round.

There was talk of him being Foggy's team mate in WSB off the back of his AMA success at one point.

Just had to google who that was and realised I was sat next to him in a beer garden years ago at 'The Fighting Cocks' near Brands Hatch - such a small world, hope he makes a good recovery.

Gobert had the talent to be the best in the world, easily, he could win races 2 stone overweight, drugged up and drunk, on multiple bikes. Hw on on Kwackers, Honda's, Yamaha, Ducati and even a Bimota.

He had more talent in his little finger than the likes of Fogarty, Slight, Russel and Edwards.

But, he was unhinged! And threw it all away.

I followed his career closely after that amazing ride at Philip Island in 94 when he turned up a Honda man, left a Kawasaki man and a double win! Some of the things he did, he won a WSB race on a piece of crap Bimota!! Rode the KR3, The MZ 500, R6's in the USA, Virgin Yamaha over here, he was always quick. And now and then he settled down as he did with Yamaha towards the end, was consistent, always a potential winner and seemed to be living clean again, but he always sipped back into being a boozy slob.

But for some reason the head was not screwed on, and he ended up being a petty criminal and having a record.

I would imagine the reason he was beat up was nothing to do with who he was, more to do with something he did in the last few years, a gangland type deal.

Can't imagine anyone would simply beat him up coz he was the Go Show.

Article I just read says he won 1 race and third in the other re Philip Island 1994.

I never knew he had gone off the rails like this ,just thought his was a career that fizzled out as many do.

When he was racing in the USA he reckoned he was got fat just to prove he could beat anyone regardless of fitness.

My bad, Goey only won one race at PI in 94, but the fact was he was supposed to be on a Honda as he was at Sugo, and turned up on a Kwak as Honda told him he had no other offers to race elsewhere in 95, only Oz or AMA or japan I think.

Seems so odd someone would beat him up just because of who he was rather than anything else like a crime thing gone wrong.

No mention of the Lucky Strike GP 500 then?

The Go Show. As stated previously he had the talent but was a loose cannon. Sex, drugs, rock n roll & superbikes. He’d have been better off in another life as a member of Motley Crue !

I think the less said about Suzuki the better! He bad mouthed Doohan pre season, made himself look silly, was not quick and then got sacked for smoking weed!

They would have been better off keeping Russell who was making progress.

Man is a weapons grade dick. Being talented doesn’t diminish that.

Coulda, woulda, shoulda. The record shows he didn’t. End of.

Have you had first hand experience of his dick like behaviour Steve?

I think stealing two $20 notes from a septuagenarians hand and then sticking fingering a purse the next day is sufficient justification for the moniker. Remember these aren’t ‘alleged’ actions either.

Does his obvious and not insignificant talent on a bike somehow provide a degree of defence in relation to his actions or behavior?
Whether he can or could ride a bike or not is irrelevant. He’s a dick by any reasonable measure.

My mate was in his pit crew and I can confirm (from him and my own experience) he was a massive talent, but an even greater fking arrogant bellend.
He had more opportunities than he ever really deserved because of the latter, and blew them all.

I suspect there is more to this story, and his bellendiness resulted in a proper kicking.

Seems odd though that they report docs did not know who he was until he could talk, but somehow he ended up in hospital having been beaten in his own home? Would the police not be able to work out it may be the guy who's house it was? Who called the ambulance?
Maybe he was not in his own house...?

Whilst I was never a fan of his, there’s no denying that he was rapid on a motorcycle and put on a show. But it’s not good news:

Saw this last night, very bad news, such a talent and a waste. He could/would have won championships and probably be sat at home with his millions if he'd have kept on the straight and narrow.

I just watched a 2 hour video on him last week. (posted here) Such a shame but I suspect his younger years have sadly caught up with him.

The Article says said:

Only came eighth when they had a 9000cc advantage wink

Possibly the ultimate flawed genius of bike racing? Could just ride anything, and superquick. But was a proper nightmare to manage.

Poor fella, 48 is no age.

Regardless of his previous behaviours.. Receiving palliative end of life care..at just 48 years of age is tragic. Far too young.
