Having trouble finding a ULEZ compliant bike
Discussion
I've been riding commuting in to London for the last couple of years, first 1.5 on a scooter and since then on an old 2001 CB600 Hornet which has been great. It's a bit clunky but I bought it for £1k and the insurance is fairly cheap which is perfect for me.
New job means I'm going to be riding in to the ULEZ come April and I'm really struggling to find a bike as the Hornet is not compliant. It'll be parked just off Oxford Street so I don't want anything particularly nice in case it gets stolen. Anything that's compliant is £3k+ and at that price insurance is killing me (I'm 26).
Any recommendations on bikes? I like the shape of the Hornet, VFR, Daytona, that sort of thing which might not be helping. Ideally I wanted to keep over 600cc so if I ride at the weekend I have a bit of punch, but I'm slowly realising I may have to drop below that just to find a bike I can afford.

at the risk of getting shot down would a 250/300 be more suitable around the city, there not really wanted so shouldnt go walkies, insurance will be cheap, they will do 90 if you need to and youd get a 13/14 plate for unde 2k.
How very dare you! This is Biker Banter: you can't recommend anything under 600cc unless it's for a girl, a dwarf or someone with a disability.

I just sold a 2000 VFR for £2200 that simply needed a £175 test to be exempt, given it had a closed loop catalyst.
So if you pick the right older bike, and a relatively small outlay, you can be ULEZ compliant. Your hornet might even be young enough to get a CoC from Honda (they generally say after 2001) which will ease the process.

Is it worth doing the test for a 2000 Fazer ? Happy to pay if it's going to pass ! I don't live in London just drive there everyday to work So if you pick the right older bike, and a relatively small outlay, you can be ULEZ compliant. CBF500 ABS is compliant (with a cert from honda), bulletproof, cheap, economical and not interesting for thieves.
And actually quite fun to ride, engine, chassis and brakes all nicely balanced. Not like many cheap Hondas where the motor can take you places the rest of the bike doesn't like...Gassing Station | Biker Banter | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
