I've been riding commuting in to London for the last couple of years, first 1.5 on a scooter and since then on an old 2001 CB600 Hornet which has been great. It's a bit clunky but I bought it for £1k and the insurance is fairly cheap which is perfect for me.

New job means I'm going to be riding in to the ULEZ come April and I'm really struggling to find a bike as the Hornet is not compliant. It'll be parked just off Oxford Street so I don't want anything particularly nice in case it gets stolen. Anything that's compliant is £3k+ and at that price insurance is killing me (I'm 26).

Any recommendations on bikes? I like the shape of the Hornet, VFR, Daytona, that sort of thing which might not be helping. Ideally I wanted to keep over 600cc so if I ride at the weekend I have a bit of punch, but I'm slowly realising I may have to drop below that just to find a bike I can afford.

You'll generally need something from MY 2008 on. Most 2008 plate sport bikes should be ok.

As above anything post 2008 should be ok so there's a bit of choice. I've just bought an NC750x for a similar reason, paid £2,750 for it. It's bigger than a 600cc but also has about half the power laugh my insurance is around £700 TPFT

GSR600? Should be cheap, similar to the Hornet, pretty bullet proof and not that nickable. Get an 09 bike for a couple of K.

at the risk of getting shot down would a 250/300 be more suitable around the city, there not really wanted so shouldnt go walkies, insurance will be cheap, they will do 90 if you need to and youd get a 13/14 plate for unde 2k.

How very dare you!

This is Biker Banter: you can't recommend anything under 600cc unless it's for a girl, a dwarf or someone with a disability.

Very get insured. Even if he could get it insured. It would be stolen at the first set of traffic lights.

One of the bike news websites recently ran a piece about the ULEZ starting that a surprising number of bikes are below the CO2 limit, but that someone needed to challenge the council with their v5 as proof of compliance.

I just sold a 2000 VFR for £2200 that simply needed a £175 test to be exempt, given it had a closed loop catalyst.

So if you pick the right older bike, and a relatively small outlay, you can be ULEZ compliant. Your hornet might even be young enough to get a CoC from Honda (they generally say after 2001) which will ease the process.

Largely speaking, if it's got injection and a cat as standard it'll be fine

Is it worth doing the test for a 2000 Fazer ? Happy to pay if it's going to pass ! I don't live in London just drive there everyday to work

I dunno enough about that model but a bit of research will see if others have managed it.

CBF500 ABS is compliant (with a cert from honda), bulletproof, cheap, economical and not interesting for thieves.

And actually quite fun to ride, engine, chassis and brakes all nicely balanced. Not like many cheap Hondas where the motor can take you places the rest of the bike doesn't like...

Yep. Originally intended to do up and sell mine but it just does everything I need it to do and I can place 100% total reliance on it.
