Looks like there’s going need to be a different stop off found for those of us who do the NE / NW ride outs. The cafe is apparently in a bad way after a major fire, roof has collapsed, so I don’t see it being open this year.

Shame, they made a great brew and flapjacks.

Oh balls, was a regular stop for me (as you know), the roads are great up there (although a bit too familiar but knowing them hasn't made you any faster) If they have any sense they will buy a burger van or something and plonk it on site, there's far too much revenue to be lost from middle aged cake and pie eating motorcyclists.

Harsh, I just don’t want to break the speed limit too much.

That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it hehe

That’s devastating for both owners and visitors. I was planning on that being my first ever proper ride out once the weather picks up. You’d think with so many people enthusiastic about the place, they’d be able to support the roof rebuild, some sort of fundraising venture, kind of like a church. I suppose it does attract a lot of old folk on a Sunday.

That’s a big fire. Total demolition and rebuild. Hope they’ve got good insurance in place.

Why would they need that? They should have insurance in place that will cover it. It’s more than just putting a roof back on. The structure won’t be sound and all the stuff inside will be destroyed too.

Dunno. In case there’s no insurance or a delay in payout? Because they want it sorted as soon as possible to minimise their losses? Because I wanted to shoehorn my old person joke in?

Gutted for them though.

I agree with you horsemeat - they need an outlet to make sure that people don't get too far into the habit of bypassing them. Otherwise once it's rebuilt they'll have the lull to build up the trade.

Shame though, it was a nice place.

Just saying I hope they have it, I’ve no idea on that side of insurance.

Pub (Cross keys?) went up near St. Mary's loch a few years back. Similar levels of damage, now rebuilt.

As long as the money is there it'll be the same.

You can hardly by pass it, it's like being on top of The Snake Pass or Woodhead.

Shame about what's happened to the cafe but to be honest I only used to stop for a 5 minute break there anyway on a blat out. The coffee was always cold and the food overpriced. No doubt it will be rebuilt once the insurance pays out.
Strange for it to burn down in the middle of winter though when it's usually not open at this time of year. Wonder if there was any foul play to cause this? scratchchin

Er, there's not exactly many other places to get a coffee on the top of that hill.

I thought that but then could be something as simple as a burst pipe with the cold alongside electrical equipment.

Conspiracy theory at the bloody hilltop cafe ...? Crikey , it’s a slow old winter this one ... and cold coffee ? In the many dozens of visits over the years - never this ...would you not simply ask for a hot one if this were the case ?
Overpriced - it’s not the cheapest but what would you charge having stocked , staffed and heated this outpost providing a meeting point for cars and bikes alike with incredible views for miles ....role on the dry weather before we all go totally bonkers ...
Pic from a day I got carried away on an early run out with the lads , and had to pick my Mrs . up at Manchester airport at 3.30 that afternoon - it was 2pm as I realised I would need to be “ efficient “ on the way back - was never going to happen but fun trying !
