Seems a new job is getting closer and closer, final details are being talked about so in 3 months times ish I could be facing a 196 miles [return] occasional commute. (Fingers crossed)

The route will be 30 miles B roads + 166 miles M40 & A34.

Budget: as much as I love the new Super Tenere, it'll be a bit of an indulgence even though they've depreciated like stones, so might be another couple of years before taking the plunge. More importnatly, I want to keep most of my disposable for the fun bike that will be decided later.

Realistically looking at up to £3/4k, even less.

Criteria:
- 100 miles comfy
- OK wind protection
- Pokey
- 200 miles per tank at 75-85 mph

Shaft drive not mandatory as it won't be used everyday due to a combination of European travels and working from home.

Likely contenders so far:
- TDM 850/900: 900 preferred. Jury still out on the 200 miles capability
- DL V-Strom 650
- RT 1100

What else?

Thanks.

My V Strom 650 used to do 250 to a tank until I went up 2 teeth on the front sprocket, now she does 270. Actually had 300 once but doubt it had one more mile in it by the time I filled up.

I reckon that's way out of budget and the S10 would already be heavy enough for me.

Sounds ideal.

bandit 1250.

mine does about 140-150 miles before the LCD fuel indicator starts flashing. it has a 19 litre tank and if i fill up as soon as the indicator flashes, it only takes 13.5 litres.

on that basis i've gone as far as 200 miles and it's then still only taken 17-18 litres.

a blackbird will do 200 miles on a tank.

my vfr800 vtec will also, but it suffers from the same early warning fuel indicator as the bandit, so it takes faith to keep going!

I can squeeze 200 out of my KTM 690 Duke, though its a test of nerves as you near the 200 mark, it has a 14l tank

this is the territory of a touring bike - hence why the fuzz use them.

Me too, only problem I'd say is they don't have the greatest weather protection. But I do swear by mine.
Handguards are a must.

my record for tank range was on my FZS600S (early square headlight fazer). the pre-foxeye ones only had a 19 litre tank, normally taking 17 odd litres to fill up.

i once got 242 miles out of 17.5 litres. rode like a nun though to get that!

i'd have a foxeye one as a commuter because i reckon 300 miles would be possible.

Well that tank gave me 59.03mpg, give or take. 300 miles in 22l gives 61.99mpg so definitely riding like a saint could do it. That last tank of mine involved a trip over to Squires Café with BIB "enjoying" the lanes a bit more than I enjoy the M62 ;-)

Cheers,
Rob

VFR800, from experience 200+ miles easy.

Also Hayabusa, have seen 180 on many occasions, 21 litre tank, often shows 11/12 to the litre, surprisingly frugal at decent speeds, probably not so good at low speeds - what's your commute like?
