K&N filters

I have seen these advertised in mags and i have heard that they make a vast improvement in power and sound. Is it worth getting on a CBR600FX?

If you're changing the exhaust & getting the bike set up on a Dyno (rolling road for bikes), then the K&N will be a great benefit. Just changing the filter alone is only likely to screw-up your mixture & make the bike run lean.

but also remember that as the OEM filter lets more air in, there's a good chance it'll let more dirt in too.....

I enquired about a K&N filter for my ZX6R and got told that the standard filter in the kwack was better .

BIKE magazine (or possibly MCN) did a test on various race cans and filters.

The overall opinion was that most of them made sweet FA difference and had a detrimental effect on the torque (which is much more useful on the road). Several of them even reduced overall power.
