Hi I don't know if anyone can help but I have a issue with my coolant sensor readout. The fan switch is working fine but all I get on the display are "----" does anyone know where the coolant temp sensor is? Service manual doesn't help much and Haynes don't do a manual for it.

Find the top radiator hose this could be hidden by the plastic fairing on the LH side as you sit on the bike.

Follow the top hose back towards the engine, the hose reduces in diameter where it connects to a water housing mounted on the block with a two bolt flange. The temp sensor is located behind the housing.

I have been lurking for some time here but I have a D6 in the garage that I am stripping and rebuilding. It was my commuter bike but after 46,000 miles I decided it needed a refresh so its now stripped down to the frame+motor plus a big box of bits.

A picture here shows the coolant temp sensor which I also had to replace on mine after about 35,000 miles:

I was able to change it without removing the tank completely (just lifted and pushed slightly to one side) and the sensor's body is hex shaped so you can get a large socket on it.

Ed

Hi,

Funny you posted this as I finally finished my rebuild this weekend and have just sold the bike (although I still physically have it as I need to MOT it for the new owner this week).

I was thinking that the dash should say "LO" when the coolant temp is below 40C so I'd expect if the sensor returns nothing then the dash would read "LO" and not "---". I will test unplugging my coolant sensor tomorrow and see what is displayed on the dash. If my bike shows "LO" still then I wonder if there is a setting available in TUNEECU to disable this part of the dash (again I can check this) whereas if my bike displays "---" then you may well have a wiring issue.

Cheers,

Ed

Oh one more thing- where abouts are you as if you are at all local I could drop off my USB cable and assuming you have a laptop you can then see if the ECU is reading the temperature correctly using the TUNEECU software which may at least narrow it down to a display problem with the dash.

Cheers,

Ed

I'm in Eastbourne. It used to read low when cold when I got it. I have just changed the coolant so hopefully it may change once run in.

Hi.

My helping of you has been hindered by the fact I realised my laptop with TuneECU is no longer in my possession due to leaving my old place of work, having to re point a brick wall this morning and the fact that my other half just called to say she has broken down on the M4 smile

I've therefore not had a chance to test the sensor behaviour but will get it done today hopefully. I did download Tune ECU again and looked through the interface and cannot see any option to do anything with the temp sensor or dash.

Tune ECU is good however and gives you a fair bit of tuning capability for free whereas for other bike's you'd be reaching for the Power Commander at about £300 and of course you get the diagnostics on top of that.

I am due tomorrow to visit Maidstone, Ashford and then Rye so could possibly arrange to drop in- the problem is I don't have my Tune ECU cable as a friend borrowed it to reset a warning light so not sure what use I could be smile

Cheers,

Ed

No worries. Thinks I'm gonna get a cable and download tuneecu it might be a fault that needs reseting. Will post once I know.

If you wanted to borrow a TuneECU cable I'm only in Worthing and have a D6 too, done the upgrade on mine a while back so would lend you the cake no problem if you are over this way at some point?

Got cable and still nothing on display. Tuneecu is showing temp though so I know it's not the wiring. Garage round the corner said to disconnect the display and reconnect it. On another note the bike needing re-mapping as previous owner didnt do it after changing the exhaust. And I managed to correct my speedo which was a little fast.
