Just for reference, what sort of angle is permitted for a number plate? A legal plate can be cunningly placed you know..

Theoretically it should be vertical (according to the Construction and use regs.). I have an American made undertray on my bike which has the number plate at about 45 Degrees. I use a smaller than legal plate, but not ridiculous. So far, no problems. I think as long as it doesn't look like you are taking the pi$$, the police have more to worry about. At least where I stay they do !

interesting. Mine is also at 45 degrees, and looks fantastic from the side - eg, not ugly, it follows the line of the rear bodywork... as in, 45 degrees downwards!

I have to say this is one of the good things about living in France. The plate on my mates monster is about 1 .5 inches by 4 inches!! - totally legal.
In fact many bikes and scooters don't even have them.

So chaps, what is the exact risk of running a small plate? £30 fine first time, "Q" plate the next? or just £30 each time?? just curious. For no other reason than aesthetics.

Penalty is at discretion officer and yourself. The first or second time you may get a VDRN (Vehicle defect rectification notice) and an FPT which require you to decide on how you are going to deal with it.

If you continually take the p*ss then the option would be removed I would imagine and you would just be reported for summons.

only prob is that a small plate is so against the "holy grail" of zero police, 100% robot cameras...

Well, when the police presence really does hit zero, then we can plate up, and have some fun. Huh, the crims WILL have done this long ago of course.
