Just passed my direct access bike test and I'm looking to buy a bike within the next couple of days. I know in my mind what I would like to buy, but I'm interested in your opinions. I am obviously very new to biking, but I am interested in a mid sports size bike, that could be used to commute, I've got a 5k budget too!

your probably eying up the best starters on the market:
the fazer, bandit and sv650
not really sporty, but a great place to start.
If sport is on your mind, there is the standard array of 600's.
However this is where commuting and sport don't mix.
high revs, and rpaid gear changing make them an exhuasting outing.
Now the down side. after 6 months, you will be frustrated with the limitations of any of these, and in reality, you should have bought a thou to start with...
Not really mental, In fact quite relaxing after 600's. As you don't need to be redlining to get anywhere, only a low range of BHP can be happily used.
My suggestion would be a triumph speed triple.

Weird that! Just came back to the site to see if I had any replies, after looking at Speed Triples on autotrader. Nice looking bikes!
I've only been passed a couple of months...
Got a SV650s and it is top. I love it, done about 1000 miles since I have had it and had no probs. Not out and out sporty but much much better than me!!!! And it is a twin so sounds just plain fantastic and everywhere I go people have good things to say about it!
Certainly can't go wrong and you can get a real nice one for 2500...!

I passed my test around four years ago, and got an SV650 to start with. It's a great little bike, with friendly handling once I'd replaced the original Mezteler tyres and cheap running costs. However it's quite cramped if you're 6 foot tall like me, so last spring I got a Speed Triple which is fantastic. However, I'm very glad I spent the time learning and doing advanced training on the SV as you had to think that much harder about every manoeuvre due to the lower power in every area (engine, brakes, cornering) and I liked the challenge.

go down the cheap/600 route first, otherwise the insurers will just laugh at you by way of the premium they want. You won't gain a lot initially if you jump straight onto a 'big' bike. A decent 600 will be faster than the ER5 (?) you did your training on. Over twice the power (at least) I guess. Get something you won't drop a b0llock on come trade in time.
