cbr600 electrics

Hello all
Just wondering if there's anyone out there with knowledge of a 1997 CBR600 (FV) electrics?

I'm trying to identify a black box that was giving of a nice long stream of black smoke and the odd flicker of flame when I got home today

It's about the size of a 10pack of cigs. 5pin multiplug connection. Under the right hand side fairing above exhaust and infront of what looks to be the ECU.

Any ideas what it might be and do? The engine still runs without it and all electrics seem to be working. But I'm sure it must have some worthwhile purpose!?

Rectifier? Need pictures or colours of wires and might be able to help.

I've got the Honda workshop manual at home I'll have a look for you this afternoon.

I have now made a positive ID of it being the regulator/rectifier. New one now ordered.
