Hi everyone,

Has anybody got any advice for an adventurous bike holiday with which a novice biker could cope? I was thinking of something foreign with a bit of mild off-road. Any ideas? Does anybody know suitable bike holiday companies?

Cheers

You could try the Pyrenees. Great biking roads and there are a few tour operators offering off road tours.

Try: www.motoaventures.com

Cool, many thanks. New Zealand looks great, but beyond my time and budget for now! I’d love to go riding across the desert with Moto Adventures, so will look into building up some off-road training and experience. Anyone got any thoughts on off-roading?

You could do worse than hopping on a ferry/chunnel and exploring France, which IMO is brilliant. Less traffic than here, superb roads (both mway and N and D and C routes) and a populus that are more biker aware than here. The Food/drink is cheaper and better quality than here too.

You even get encouraged by the 'Le Flic' from time to time

It's cheap and close and worth doing for the experience.......

Look at www.motorcyclevoyager.com or even better still, buy the magazine and every month there is something that is suitable for touring newcomers whether it be in the UK, Europe or further afield.

It will certainly provide new ideas, and will also give the lowdown on good routes, accomodation costs, what to see when you get there and everything else you need to know!

The best biking holiday I ever had was sort of Foreign.

I took my rebuilt RD350LC and a small bag of clothes to the Isle of Skye via most of the Scotish Highlands to run it in.

I stayed at Youth Hostels and had a week of scratching.

I went alone and had the best holiday ever.

mentioned before on here but brettours (advertised in Bike Magazine I think) are really good - I've done a few with them & they are organised really well with routes that riders of different experiences can cope with.
A mate of mine has done some Beemer off road day in Wales - came back raving about it but have no idea what / where / who runs it.

Thanks T-C! I believe there's a nice photo of you here

Hi Anna - I know the place, World of BMW organise these weekends. I was going to go on one, but am going to the shorter but cheaper Yamaha equivalent instead.

Have you done any off roading yet? It can be great fun and will improve your bike control. However I wouldn't want to ride to the Pyrenees on my off road bike - put it in a van and drive down. BTW don't believe any of the blurb that says bikes like Varaderos etc can be taken off road. They might be able to handle a smoothish track but you can't take them anywhere where you might drop it. You would never be able to pick it up.

Hi annsxman - No, not done any off-road riding yet ... but I've a day at the Yamaha off-road school next month! How did you find it improved your road biking?

Does anybody know of a bike that will genuinely cope with off-road and be OK as a daily ride on the road too? A GS?

Hi - Are you sure this is the right web link?

Does anybody know where to get insurance that covers off-road riding?

WOW!

Well, I've just begun with a day at the Yahamha off-road school. I wasn't expecting it to be more adrenaline than a track day! We were all doing jumps by lunchtime. I learnt a lot. Roll on more off-roading, I'm off to book my next holiday ...
