Cars moving over.
Discussion
There has been a few threads recently and this has been mentioned. I thought it deserves a thread of its own.I am not talking about traffic jams here I am talking about free flowing traffic.
I am not too sure its a good idea. Altough it is good that these people are using their mirrors and spotting us they are not always looking ahead. ie there may be a truck coming the other way very close to the line etc. they even do it on double solid white lines which I try not to cross because i dont want to get 6 points
The main reason I think its a bad idea is that when they spot you late or actualy when your just about to overtake them they make a sharp reaction movement over to the left.
If im overtaking you I dont need you to move over cos there is already enough room.
1 person I was over taking moved that quickly that they hit the curb went up the curb then bounced back towards me

also one guy in a bmw when I was almost home one day after doing about 300 miles of hard riding moved right over. he didnt need too there was nothing on the other side of the road I could have overtook him any time I wanted but I couldnt be arsed I was quite happy at 60 sitting there basicaly having a rest. But because he had moved over and I didnt overtake he and his pasengers started to get abusive and he started driving eraticaly which pissed me off and made me want to put some distance between us.Que big speed in an area where there are camera's and cop cars I then rode like a twat all the way home.
basicaly what I am saying is if I want to get past I can easily. I have the speed and my bike is narrow I can get past you just about anytime anywhere. On the rare occasions that I cant get past that dosnt bother me I have patience I can wait until the next opportunity.
ps as for saying thankyou to someone who has gone over. I do if im going slow but have any of you car drivers put you hand out of teh window at 100mph? well its the same if I take my left hand of the grip and you dont want that do you. I am wobbly enough with two hand so please dont get too bothered if people dont do it. Bikes are a lot harder to ride than cars. you dont fall off a car

Phil,
If you want to get passed easily, then just pootle around in 1st gear. If you want to get past, then grab a handful.

edited to add do you have to quote me when I use the wrong word I mean past of course doh!

When I am in the car I just give a single flick of the left indicator to tell the bike I am aware. I move over a bit and it's up to the bike whether he wants to pass.
When I am on the bike and someone moves over a lot, I sometimes feel pressurised into overtaking although I can't always be arsed. I still wait and pick my moment. It's my bones on the line, not the cars.
Now when they move over to the right, that's another matter
It's usually BMW's that seem to do this!

Generally - if I observe a bike *waiting to pass* behind me I will move left at the next safe overtaking opportunity if I can - as I have NEVER been held up by a bike...
I am often thanked with a raised left hand...
Who I hate overtaking me is the numpties who do it on the exit of a 30mph...only to hold me up in the NSL...

That's right I'm not.
Not you that man ,, the other chap who started the thread ,, you move over and he gets pissed off , i guess if you dont move over its the same
Mark you obviously havnt read what I have written.
I will outline the salient points again for you.
1)I can get passed if I want anyway
2)If I cant then I don't care there will always be another oportunity
3)numpties panic and swerve quickly making a crash more likely( see my experiences above)
4) As another contributer has written you feel pressured into overtaking when you dont want to sometimes.
So to sum up I dont give a shit if you dont move out of the way! Understand now?
this is only my opinion and I do not speak for all bikers.
Pesty, in those situations where your just heading home and you can't be arsed overtaking I'd drop back and give a little wave to indicate 'thanks for the offer'.
If they've seen you, then you can usually see them keeping an eye on you in the rear view mirror, so they should see your not interested in overtaking.
Oh, re double whites, with all the extra ones cropping up around here I treat them as advisory on the bike where conditions[1] permit a safe overtake.

It's usually pretty obvious if a bike is trying to get past ... either they appear behind you at warp 9 and hoon straight by, or they end up sitting just off your offside rear 3/4 waiting for a gap in the on-coming traffic or better visibility. If I'm on a wide A road, I'll make more space if on-coming traffic is the problem.

fair enough are you basing this on experience? do you prefer it if cars move over when you are on your bike? out of interest which part of it is bolox and why?
ps thanks for your constructive arguments for or against!

disagree all you want that is your perogative. There will still be considerate drivers who move over at the correct time and those that dont.

thats is perfectly acceptable and I would like all drivers to do this.
I am not talking about all drivers in all situations, mainly numpties who move over without being aware of their surroundings

I have done my time on Bikes and have learnt that you should always expect the unexpected , treat all other drivers as suspect , so it makes me laugh when some one is complaining when others drivers are "trying" to help them make progress.
Or is it that the other drivers are over reacting because you are right up their Chuff or sitting in their blind spot

to quote myself" am not talking about traffic jams here I am talking about free flowing traffic."
I dont need help in this situation. Love people moving over during traffic jams or long slow moving snakes of trafic or did you miss that bit?
at least you are giving an argument rather than just swearing.
I will repeat myself If I am approaching a car at speed and I decide to over take I will only do so if there is enough room. So I dont need you to move over. If the driver isnt paying attention and spots me at teh last minute and swerves out of the way I think this can be dangerous. like I say its unesesary if there wasnt a gap big enough I would have slowed down in advance. I dont ride up people chuff. especialy if Im not in banzai mode.
so which part of that is bolox?
