50 out of 100 miles in the pissing rain. I'd forgot how much fun it is wet.

First world problems and already doing the Mrs head in..biggrin

Refund on the Speed Triple due any day and with the money already burning a hole in my pocket, with a nice day instore, I thought id try an alternative, took out the new BMW 1000XR.

Also took the opportunity to make a 100 mile round trip to drop some bits off on a full tank of fuel..

Same gripe with these as the (only) other style of bike ive tried like this, a Multistrada, no matter what height the screen is, it just blows the windstream directly into your lid, leaving your head bobbing around in the turbulence much past 80ish, making the ride more tiring and not doing much for vision in my opinion.

At least, unlike my old S1000R, adjustment of the suspension made a noticable difference but it was still to soft for proper playtime, it all feels remote and distant.

Would suit about a third of my usual run out but that would be the less interesting third, just not my kind of bike, for now anyway.

Fair play, my local dealer doesnt mind throwing you the keys for anything and I really would like to buy another BMW as the dealer and service ive had from them has been great, so I took out the new S1000R for another test ride.

The suspension really showed up how (unnecessarily) firm the set up on the Speed Triple is, even in Dynamic Pro its compliant but controlled and well damped, doesnt throw you out of the seat or make you wince when you see a pothole/poor road.

The motor sounds good with plenty of pops and bangs on the overrun and BMWs electronics and quickshifter are the best ive used, the Hayes (?) brakes also felt really strong and progressive.

The "new" non shiftcam engine in both the S1000R and XR feels so weak low down thou, the old motor felt so much livelier to me, this one takes some winding on to get at the power (vs the Triple or KTM).

The looks are nice in places but BMWs use of plastics and materials makes parts of the bike look like a cheap 125, contrast the ohlins, brembos and carbon front mud guard of the Speed Triple (at £15,000) Vs the cheap looking guard, forks and brakes of this £17,000 M Sport Model)

I read some comment about the combined rear light/brake light/indicators being hard to see in certain conditions and having looked closely at the set up this time , id agree.

Really wanted to spend my cash with BMW this year but the only reasons I can justify the decision are ruled by the head and not the heart, all bikes are fun but S1000R is just less fun than it used to be and the competition has moved on much further ahead.

Heart says SuperDuke but I cant find anyone with a good word to say about my local dealer and issues with the bikes (ive read online) are off putting a tad....Maybe keep me cash for 6 months, it'll do my head in but it would be the sensible thing to do!

Sorry to read about your woes with your Speed Triple. Maybe you’ve been unlucky (or l’ve been lucky). Apart from a couple of minor gripes about the keyless and Bluetooth, mine has been spot on, and it’s a brilliant bike to ride. I softened the suspension right down and find it fine for the road now - it was bloody stiff on the factory settings.

Maybe give Triumph another go? Perfectly understand if you don’t want to though, I’ve been there before when you just completely lose faith in a vehicle.

I think a must for most bikes is to get the suspension sorted, i.e. replaced. A properly sprung rear shock for your weight and decent internals, along with new springs and vales in the front will transform any bike.

Also a hell of a lot cheaper than going for the ohlins-specific model variant

Have you seen this discount on Ktm https://www.northamptonmoto.co.uk/new-bikes/118677...

Also the 1290 adventure is a great bit of kit, I had a go on the old MY19 version and it was great fun

This. I had custom (and not that expensive) suspension done front and rear on the FZ-09 and it was dialed in so well, absolutely loved it.

I think its a must for the new Speed Triple but BMW, KTM etc etc have proved it isnt a "must " for everyone...

Couple of months... worldwide shortage of containers so might be a little longer...
Just as long as they don't ship before the Duc is aboard!
