My car has an appetite for headlamp bulbs

My 1992 E34 has started blowing the nearside headlamp bulb. As soon as you turn on the igninition, the bulb blows and Dip Beam comes up on the message centre.
There is no need to turn on the headlamps to get the bulb to blow, just turning on the ignition is enough.

Any ideas anyone???
