Hi All,

Just become a virgin Beemer owner with a 1998 328i Cab, and so far am really pleased with it.

Only question is: What is the alarm on my car?! Insurers want me to name it, but I don't know where it is/what it is. It is a standard 328i Cab E36 and hasn't had any changes made to it (father in law owned it from new), and doesn't have remote central locking.

I will go out and have a look for it, but can anyone come to my rescue??

Many thanks

Rich

PS used Renovo on the rear window...wow what a difference, definitely recommended.

If its the standard BWM alarm fitted from new then there is no point informing the insurer as this will have been taken into account within the vehicle grouping.

Find that a bit strange
Most BMW's of that age would have had the standard fit BMW alarm (made by Serpi Star I think) fitted, the remote should look like a 10mm thick rectangle with the top right corner cut off, and a red and a grey button Usually refered to as T1/2/3 in BMW terms depending which model alarm was fitted
of course I could be talking complete bo-lax, if in doubt your dealer should be able to do a check of the original build spec which would include the alarm spec

Hi,

The insurer asked me to fill in a form stating which alarm it has...

I always thought that it was strange that it is not remote central locking/alarm...

It has a code thing on the computer that you type a 4 digit figure into and can't start the engine without it.

It was owned from new by my father in law, so will have to ask him if he lost the remote!!! Quite likely actually.

Spoke to the dealer and they were moderately helpful but just said that it should be a BMW.EWS . Don't know if the insurers will know what that is!!

Thanks for the help.

EWS II & III

The electronic immobiliser is built into the ignition key (in the form of a microchip) and operates on a multiple electronic coding basis. The motor vehicle can only be started when the evaluation electronics have identified the coding in the key for starting permission. The key is simply turned, and by the time the ignition switch is reached, the system has identified the electronic coding in the key and 'granted' starting permission.

Thanks Raceboy. Did spend an hour or so on google last night, but must have been searchin the wrong words!

Still find it strange that I don't have a remote for the central locking...but as long as it is the key that does the immobiliser, then that is the important bit.

Thanks again, and happy cruising.
