..or is it me?

I'm not too 'au fait' with the in's and out's of M3 ownership - but if I see another M3 - I'll give a little flash of my lights just to say 'nice car', 'nice wheels' or 'good taste mate' (and if I'm really lucky) 'hello sexy female M driver!'.

Occasionally I get a flash back or a wave, but more often than not - nothing. I know between Mini drivers, Porkers and TVR drivers this is commonplace - am I way off the mark expecting something back from my fellow M3'ers - or am I just an over excitable enthusiast - or is the M3 just not special enough to warrant a fellowship between other owners!?

Sometimes I get a response, but the reason for this post was that I flashed a guy this morning on the way to work, and he glared at me like I'd gone round his house at Christmas and p1ssed on his kids!

Pah!

I find the same: I hardly ever get acknowledged. The problem is that lots of M3s in London are driven by either drug dealers, DJ types (generally Asians with baseball caps and wacky facial hair and numberplates saying BAD or similar) or City tossers (I work in the City myself and drive an M3, but I am an enthusiast) who have them because they are the top of the range 3 Series.

Zod has nailed your problem! Too many people buy the M3 simply because it's a BMW and the top of the range model.

True - a lot of tossers do drive M3's - in fact a lot of tossers drive BMW's full stop for the reasons listed, hence the bad reputation. Still - I would've thought there might be a few more enthusiast owners than my road survey would suggest!

Or maybe I am the sad car obsessed freak that my wife says I am......

I've got a Z3M, a couple of days ago I came across an MCoupe, same colour, in the outside lane of an empty motorway. I sat behind him for 10 seconds, waiting for him to move over before I undertook, hoping to get a wave as I drove past him, but no, nothing

I've never been lucky enough to see another Mcoupe whilst driving the breadvan!

Trouble is, when they're coming towards you, from a distance you could mistake them for a regular Z3 and i'd never live that down!

If i spotted a Z3m, I'd definitely give a big thumbs up though! I even think about flashing regular M3's (cause we share the same straight 6) but I think i'd either get abuse or funny looks!

Warning: predictable BMW driver stereotyping joke ahead Have to say that these days to appease Ted.

Given that they have so much trouble with the indicator stalk, how on earth do you expect them to find the flash control on a hurry.

Thats slander! We are always flashing people to get out of the BMW lane!

That's true! There's so many buttons on my BMW, it's hard enough to find the "arnco magnet" for quick transfer into the fast lane when I join the motorway.

I can't be doing with indicating at the same time!

just hope you don't have a bike behind you, otherwise you could be minus a mirror in double time!

[/sarcastic mode off]

I ALWAYS check mirrors! I am the exception that proves the rule.

I even pull right over when a bike's behind me, letting him past (quite often receive a )

When the M3 came out in 2001 it most were owned by enthisiasts so you could expect more of a friendly reply, but nowadays more and more cars are bought by people that haven't got a clue. My BMW dealer says it's a lot less fun selling the cars than it used to be and sometimes the people they sell M3s to shouldn't really be buying them. But a sale is a sale..

Mind you I've found the same with Porsche, when I flashed and waved a 996 driver in my Boxster he looked at me as if I had comitted a 'road rage' incident!

I've had an M3 since early 2002 when they were stll difficult to get. I'm on my second because some utter cnts stole my first. When I first had the first one, I did used to get acknowledged (and there were not may on the road). That has all changed now, especially in London. I did have some banter with a good chap ina petrol station in Lincolnshire a few weeks ago though.

There are still plenty of enthusiast M3 drivers around (many of us are to be found at www.bm3w.co.uk), but I fear we may now be outnumbered by the rest.

It is a fantastic car and if you see me, mine is Avus Blue. I know how to use those orange flashing lights and I will even let you in a junctions.

errrr, it's cos you've got the wrong one......

Everyone knows there's only one real M3, that's the e30. Every one since then has been a marketing excercise (and a very succesfull one, which is why so many non enthusiasts, i.e. tossers) buy them. Unfortunately, the enthusisasts now get lumped into the same group as said tossers which isn't fair.

The answer, sell "Estate Agent's Express", buy a nice 330 (which is a much nicer, more subtle car, and an E30 M3 to keep it company.

Flash away to E30 M3 owners and you always get a flash back.......oooohhhh matron.....

Be careful with waving to other people in the same type of car.

I waved to a lady a couple of years ago as I was going home, I think it was in the 330 cab rather than the M3, only to have her follow me to outside my home, although I didn't recognise her thought it must have been somebody I knew, when I got out she said hello and was very please to see me

Anyway we had a chat, she did even know we were driving the same car !

yeah, that sounds like a very sensible way to deal with it.

Thanks for your comments.

the first or second time some dumbass tries to kill you by pulling out without looking (as they think that they have sufficent midrange in their M3 (or whatever) to get into the traffic flow of faster cars) you learn on a bike to be very aware of this problem.

The midrange on a bike will demolish most cars (certainly on an M'way). If someone wantonly pulls across with no checks whatsoever, then if the situation dictates, their mirror will certainly get a knock - not necesserily off, but enough to remind them that to replace the £350 heated, painted unit, they may as well pay a little more attention to their blind spot next time, otherwise the dealership parts department will be saying hello.

You can see this type of behaviour from car drivers all the time on the m'way. (PS I do drive a car as well, but having ridden a bike am aware of the treatment most car drivers dish out to bike riders).

PPS I only ride/race on the track now as there are too many cretins on the road, so I won't be indulging in any wing mirror tennis.
