Driving along and the traction control light and the EML light came on and the car feels sluggish.
Pulled over, tried various things. Lifted bonnet, had a look underneath, couldn't see anything loose. Let bonnet down but didn't shut it as I thought an AA call was necessary.
Got back in and determined that the traction control was permanently engaged and cutting power to the engine. Turned the engine off, turned it on again and all was well.
Eased off and drove away. Pootled about a bit and then speeded up. BANG! Bonnet flies up and hits windscreen
No damage other than a distorted bonnet luckily but a tad annoying! £450 of insurance excess too
...and I still don't know what caused the traction control issue...

Had this with my Landrover once, on one of the first drives after the restoration. Bonnet came up too, but was stopped by massive steel beam catch; and speed was only 40mph.
Didn't experience that again since I have a massive spare wheel on the bonnet, not recommendable for the Alpina though

I had a similiar experience. Driving a square shape Audi 80, I'd been tail-ended and pushed into the car in front. Dented bumpers both ends and headlamps glasses etc - nothing too dramatic. but I'd lifted the bonnet to check for damage. When I put it down,it wouldn't close fully, but alsoo seemed secure. Exchanged address' etc... and drove away.
100yds down road BANG, bonnet flies up and folds over the roofline putting a dent into the middle of the front of the roof . Insurance waers said it was a seperate incident and therefore a new claim and second £300 excess. Still at least I'd got protected for life no-claims bonus, nobody was hurt and metal can be unbent.

Were you limited to 4,000 rpm when this happened?
Is so it looks like limp home mode engaged. These usually reset when you start the engine again. IF it is this best to have the diagnostics checked. I had this for no reason and was triggered by having very low fuel in the tank which then sucked air in.

Nope, the EML and Traction Control warning lights were both on and revving the engine slightly had it running very rough as if the traction control was trying to cut power to the engine.

Ted, try www.fabdirect.com for a bonnet. Most seem to be about £100 ish. Might even have the same colour.
