In a few weeks time I am due to drive to France Ski-ing and have started to think about snow chains for my current Sport Touring which has the 18" MV Alloy wheels.

BMW do not have a solution and the calls I have made to a few UK based snow chain outlets also do not have a solution. I was hoping to get snow chains which include a plastic round cover over the wheel nuts that force the snow chains away from the alloy wheel.

Has anyone faced this problem and found a solution ?

I guess my best bet may be to purchase some standard 16" steel wheels and buy standard wheel chains in a French Hypermarket. Any suggestions on where you could buy bog standard 3 series wheel rims ?

i may be able to help having gone through the same pain!, I bought a set of 17" Alloys plus Winter tyres which i could rent to you based on mileage.

Alternatively after the event i found the following which is a much cheaper solution enabling you to keep your wheels/tyres and have a system you can transfer to other cars, also they look a lot cleaner than fitting chains, they importantly guarantee no damage to your rims!!!

Drop me a mail if I can be of help

F355GTS,

Many thanks for the feedback and offer of your wheels but I am looking for a more permanent solution so will investigate the website you suggested.

Thanks for the Spikes Spider recommendation - I invested in a set and have just returned from my Ski-ing trip and the Spikes Spiders were a success. It even seemed to enhance the look of the MV Alloy Wheel with even the Gendarmerie taking a close look !

I wish I'd have found them before shelling out on a set of rims and winter tyres!

Glad to hear they work
