Just bought my first BMW, an old e28 528i SE, picking it up next weekend, just wondering who any of you recommend for insurance, I'm a member of the BMW Car Club GB and have had some quotes all around the £1000 mark as I'm 22 years old, anybody you think do cheaper quotes for insurance, any help welcome

I have always found Admiral to be very good.
One of my previous cars was a white 528i with a dogleg box....C767XDX. If you have bought that one then it is a cracker. They really are excellent cars.

Got insurance sorted, £959.50 with Chris Knott, by far the cheapest quote I had. Recommended through the BMW car club website, all the other companies wouldn't insure anyone under 25!
Thanks for your help guys, can't wait to pick the car up on Sunday

FYI, i've just done the 'insurance rounds' with a load of insurers for the M5. Tried the following:

Tesco
Endsleigh
Chris Nott
Privilege (Direct Line)
Elephant (Admiral)
AA
A Manning
Footman James

I'm always amazed at the difference in quotes and the way they treat you. I can't 'name and shame', but I will point out the 'good' insurers- you can work out the rest.

Tesco were pretty competitive across the board (for different vehicles), but not the best, Endsleigh and some people at Privilege (depends on who you get on the end of the phone) offered excellent service, and Elephant gave by far the best quote - £960 for 1 years NCB. Compare this with 'another' insurer who quoted £1500 but were able to offer me 5 years NCB - work that one out! They also had the cheek to say

We don’t aim to compete with these budget type direct writers ..

What's that all about??!
And one insurer still hasn't got back to me despite filling in his web forms yesterday morning.

Ted, if you're listening - I assume there isn't anywhere I can put this information on the site? If not, why not create somewhere? Ringing round for insurance is one of life's great pains, and I get the impression that the best deals just move around from insurer to insurer every few months - in the past I have been offered 'NU' policies by two different brokers on the same vehicle which had completely different premiums - the explanation was that NU was simply favouring one broker over another. It's this kind of stuff which costs us a fortune if we can't happen to find the right deal at the right time. All I want is a box where I can type in 'BMW' or 'M5' and it gives me a list of the top 3 scoring brokers in the last 3 months.

I usually keep a list (like this www.mmm-five.net/Other/insurance.htm) of the ones I have tried the previous year and start at the best offer and work down...

That looks excellent. And reminds me - I also tried www.confused.co.uk - a very good service. They found the Elephant quote for me - here's their results page:

ELEPHANT.CO.UK - £990.15
QUOTE-A-CAR - £1364.34
QUOTE-A-CAR - £1417.87
QUOTE-A-CAR - £1916.47
INSURE IT ALL/Allianz Cornhill - £2500.58
INSURE IT ALL/Allianz Cornhill - £2633.78
INSURE IT ALL/Norwich Union - £2708.50
AXA - insurer unable to quote for your details
NORWICH UNION DIRECT - insurer unable to quote for your details
DIRECT LINE - insurer opted out. click name for info
ESURE - insurer opted out. click name for info

Again, fyi if anyone is going to go through this pain in the next few weeks ....

I found confused to be a load of crap. They state that a given insurer won't quote, when I'd already got a quote from that insurer direct which was 50% cheaper than the cheapest quote they could give. The useless articles.
