help - automatic window drop on E36 coupe

My father 1992 E36 coupe has an intermitant problem with the automatic window drop when opening and closing the door. If the window doesn't raise when he closes the door, then he cant lock the car. The electric windows work fine.

Any idea what the problem is and how to fix it
