Predominatley for Silverbackmike!

A lot of the 2.8 and 4.4 engines suffer from bore wear due to too much sulphur in our fuel.

To see if the engine has been "cured" is quite simple. On the n/s of the engine just below the starter motor will be a 5mm allen key/bolt thing (you know what i mean), signifying "cure" done.

If the engine HASN'T been "cured" there will simply be a hole.

BMW will happily cure them upto 100,000 miles (and a bit over) and providing they have a service history...
Your local dealer will run a simple engine test, fill out some forms, send the to BMW GB and await a response.

If no history BMW will still contribute something toward the job. (but i never said that)

Hope this helps you all...

Seems to come up quite often.

And if you've got any pearly words of wisdom regarding the new 7 series 'box, do tell.

Scoobs - I thought the sulphur & bore wear issues were cured in the M62 and later engines, and with a block swap on the M60s?

Be prepared for your post to set of waves of panic in the BMW community if this is not the case!

OK, just to clear things up for my thicky brain, we're only talking 2.8 and 4.4 V8s here? What about the 3.0,3.5,4.0 V8s?

Cheers,
Rob

I thought that only the 4.0 V8 and not the 4.4 was affected?

My understanding was that, of the V8s, it was the M60 3.0 and 4.0 engines that were affected and that the M62 3.5 and 4.4 (and later) engines were not. That's what all the internet blurb suggests anyway...

The affected engines were:

M52 1995 - 1998: 320/ 323/ 328/ 520/ 523/ 528/ 728 (2.2, 2.5 and 2.8 litres)

M60 1992 - 1996: 530/ 540/ 730/ 740 (3.0 and 4.0 litres)

All others including the M62 4.4 V8 had Alusil blocks.

Nikasil is not usually a problem anymore. Fact is the fuel that caused the problem has not been available in the UK for five years now, so any problems should have already shown up.

I have a 130k E34 540i touring on the original block with no problems at all.
