My neighbour has a 2000 323 which has developed a major reving problem. It happens with the engine cold or warm and the revs will suddenly go wildly up.....or down without warning.
BMW diagnosed and replaced a split hose from the airbox, which has done absolutely nothing.

Any ideas what it might be ?

we had a new '01' model 323ci & right from new the car had terrible idle control especialy whilst pulling away or waiting and riding the clutch at a junction on a hill, took it back to the dealer who said it was a characteristic of the engine! this apllied to the 320 model also, needless to say we got rid of the car and swore we never buy another BMW, now I have an M5 doh!

Take it to the dealer and demand it is sorted. The engine management system will issue a fault code that the BMW dealers diagnostics can read. It sounds as if it is either the air/fuel mixture or electrics or the fly by wire throttle. Dealers always try and fob you off that there is nothing wrong. If they play dump phone up Bracknell and complain.

Couple of ideas - try investigating the crankcase breather hose. It resides under the cover at the top of the engine in the middle. Make sure it hasn't perished or looks overly worn. Does the car always start first time?
