I have a 99 (T) 323i (E46), fantastic car, but have a small problem with steering under braking. Imagine the scene, I'm sure you have all been there. You are driving down the street when some old granny steps up to the kerb and looks like she is just about to topple off the pavement in front of you. As quick as a flash you swing your right foot over to tickle the brake, (Just in case) as soon as your foot makes the slightest contact with the pedal, the steering wheel jumps out of your hands and momentarily sets your 7 spokes on a collision course with the kerb. As soon as you start to tread on the pedal more, it's fine, and brings your pride and joy to a gentle well timed stop.

Possible exageration, with the steering wheel jump, but you get the picture. Before anyone responds, I have had two new sets of discs (One of which was warped), and a new set of links fitted to the tie bars, but unfortunately the problem is still there. Anyone had any similar experiences, or got any ideas.

Have you looked at the suspension - specifically shocks?

Well, it is going in to BMW main dealer for first time next Friday, just wanted to have a bit of amo' before they sting me for a whole new front end or something. Is that a hunch or is it based on a previous experience?

not specific E46 experience, but general Bimmer / automotive experience.

There are, I think, only a few things it could realistically be:

1. Brakes - do you have a faulty calliper, so that one is giving less pressure on the disc
2. Tyres - correct pressure and good condition - different tread / wear?
3. Suspension - is one shock (on the side that pulls in) weaker than the other
4. Stearing rack - some sort of wear.

On the basis that the it only happens on light pressure I would think that it could be something to do with one of the braking circuits / callipers....?

Thanks

That's a lot of help. I will let you know how I get on next week at the dealership. I don't really know what it could be, but when you come to mention suspension, the steering does sometimes jump, just as you hit a speed bump, or pothole, so it could well be that.

Update on problem:-

Both front ball joints have excess play in, and could constitute a M.O.T. failure (Common problem so I am told). BMW Main dealer quote for rectifying problem £645.00 + VAT. Spoke to BMW independant specialist and they have quoted me £326.00 all in for same parts (BMW)and work. Anyone had any similar experiences of rip off main dealerships.

I can confirm the bit about the ball joint wear being a common thing (and it being an MoT failure) and the fact that an independent using parts from, say, www.gsfcarparts.com will be save you a packet.

Both the fronts have been separately done on my 330. One's a BMW original part and the other is a GSF sourced item. My independent confirmed that there is absolutely no discernible difference between them. Needless to say you'll spot the difference immediately with a quick look at the remaining contents of your wallet afterwards (where the £45/hour non-BMW labour rate for the job also makes a handy contribution too).

I've had the same 'rip off' problems with a local BMW dealer... rang for a price for no. 2 inspection and they quoted £550. I found an independent BMW specialist and he did it for £347 - and that included a new caliper.

I've stopped using the BMW garage now!
