Does anyone using this forum have a bmw with the old style in car phone.
I have just purchased a e39 540 1997 it has the full hands free kit built in, it would be a shame not to use it.
trouble is i have put in various sim cards but it just doesnt work.

What's the score with the phone controls? I've got 'em on the E46 steering wheel. Does that mean there's any gubbins behind it that I could make use of?

Ted, the steering wheel phone-controls are standard on the E46 wheel regardless of whether or not the car has a factory-fit phone fitted. To make use of them you either need a fitted car-phone (which I guess you'd have spotted!) or one of those new-fangled bluetooth connection things (if it's got bluetooth prep then you'll see there's a "mating" (ooooh-errrr) button on the centre-console just behind the gear lever surround). If it doesn't have either of those then the phone buttons on the wheel are for display only I'm afraid. AFAIK there isn't anyone offering after-market BMW factory fit type phone kits, but I'd love to be proven wrong (altho they'll probably want mucho money for them).

stay there a minute phone dudes.....

Right,

Ted the Alpina wont have bluetooth, sorry...

If you have a Nokia phone (and some other make will too) i can put you in touch with a man who will fit a kit and wire it up to the steering wheel controls. This will then work off the dash as per factory spec.

All wires hidden... looks pukka

Phone kit fitted £175 + vat

Steering wheel wire in thingy majoodler £150 + vat

God i'm good...
