Dunno if you are on about retro fitting a factory system which is normally a bloody expensive exercise (I've been told it's £4k+ in a 996, wouldn't expect it to be much cheaper in a BMW).

Becker do nice DIN size CD head units which double as satnav, from about £600 at the internet car audio discounters.

Don has got some sort of GPS colour screen "box" which was about £1,000 which is moveable from car to car. This works out very cost effective with 2 cars+ and has the security benifits of being able to take the unit out or leave it at home when you don't need it. Don's is "Navman" a similar system is built by "Garmin"

Not sure it is cost effective retro fitting the BMW one - I have the Becker one that Daz mentions and love it, but it won't look as nice in the E46.
Maybe try contacting www.prestige-audio.co.uk - friends of mine and very knowledgable about such things (think they said 75% of their business is BMWs!)

The Blaupunkt travel pilot is relatively easy to fit yourself - I have fitted it on the porker and on my merc

What about SmartNav ?
I understand this is a retrofit system that monitors your position by GPS and provides ongoing instructions which can also take account of changing road conditions, accidents etc.
I was told that you could even ask for directions to your nearest BMW dealership --- should that be required !

Get a NAVMAN iCN 630 - dedicated device not a PDA one. Fan-flippin-tastic and you can move it from car to car...Small enough to hide in the glovebox.

I'm a convert...

Ted - just call a dealer. They have standard prices for retrofit I think. For example, towbar from new is 800, or 1000 if you missed a box (you can guess how I know this!). The standard fit satnav is fantastic - I love it. Not quite as nice to use as the Alpine (difficult to scroll around randomly), but very detailed map.
