Oh yes, Squire...

Verily and forsooth, if saloon cars were akin to Star Wars' transport devices, this would be Grand Moff Tarkin's Death Star.

And Alderaan is toast (like the quarterback )!

DeR me old chum, once again your astonishing eloquence surpasses my humble understanding but I smiled nonetheless.

Enjoy your new car. I traversed a roundabout in Basingstoke some months ago and immediately prior I espied the familiar Blue and White circle in my rear view. Tempted to play I whisked around the reason for which my adopted hometown is known as "donut city" as fast as the PSM would allow me and attempted to head off into the what-has-to-pass-for-blue horizons of Hampshire. To my utter astonishment, not to mention chagrin, although for a moment or two I had outpaced the dual grilled one to my rear I found that the now all too familiar blue and white logo practically filled my rear-view mirror just a second or two later.

Being of the sort to never needlessly hold another fellow motorist up I, as swiftly as safety and modesty allowed, pulled over to allow this blistering charger by. It duly did and although in many other ways appeared to be as subtle a saloon as I have seen in many a long year I was just able to make out a small distinguishing mark on its rear before it dissappeared into the haze. M5

A superb choice of stealth chariot. My it serve you well and long.

Being a former owner of the predecessor model M5 I am unduly jealous, however I wish you all the best now that you have joined the massed ranks (or is that, rank mass) of bloody BMW drivers.

Excellent news mate! Scoobyzoom hinted at BT&P that you were about to part with the folding stuff. Sounds like an awesome beast. Bet you're missing that fridge tho'!!

Cheers chaps,

Strangely enough, unlike the the black blob, the car seems to encourage delicate, almost sedate progress, certainly through the urban environs, although this is surely down to me being unused to the bite point on the clutch.

Not had any 'Bee-em vankster' type gestures as the old Lex had already coiffeured me in the art of inconspicuous Manc progress.

What has impressed enormously me is the material quality: my 740i registered peerless switchgear quality on the tactility meter and this is no exception: the Lexus may have a reputation for eerie silence but throw in a few lumpen potholes and that big dash emits the odd tell tale minisqueaks that even old uncle Bluebird '75 would be proud of.

Like a true, modern Ingolstadtian, Munchen's mile muncher is built not in Scotland but without question 'from girders.'

Power?

Let's just say that where a 6.75 blown block from Cheshire sort of surfs you forth then kind of 'stays there,' this baby just is not for relenting.

With a good headwind and a few knots under her bow, the old girl can be mashed with absurd effect during 4th, 5th and particularly astonishingly, in 6th...you are belted forwards and it just goes on and on and on...the sense of plantedness better than anything I've ever tilled.

Putty in one's hands? Well I really wouldn't know but the fuss is fully justified. I just love it...

The fact that it sounds like a Junkers 88 on a dive when tharped warms the cockles, it really does.

Well, just had the emminent pleasure of Mr N. Shop-Keeper picking me up in Darkest Salford for a spot of Aston Gazing and luncheon under the cosseting bosom of the big Yellow "M" in sleepy Wilmslow.

My Christ, this thing goes. Pick a gear, any gear. Hammer down. WAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRP!!! WAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRP!!! Silly speeds in ludicrously short time, and utterly comfortable, conversation a plenty with the hairs on the back of your neck soundtrack of the Nascar burble just there on the sound stage. Not intrusive, well, not unless you want it to be.

In short, perfection. Well, as near as dammit. For a seasoned town worker comme moi, the daily stirrage of the gearbox would perhaps annoy over time. Also, in spite of the 4 "stolen off a Bavarian church organ" 'zorst pipes at the rear, in someones mirror it just resembles another ubiquitous 5-Series. Q Car? Yes, but it means the numptista don't quite do the Red Sea impression that sometimes you'd like them to.

To quote 'Blackadder: "Otherwise, excellent

Oh, and Stratstones in Wilmslow have one on the forecourt for nineteen and a half grand.....

I'd like to say it was a pleasure, Mr T but we both know that would be stretching things too far.

However, wasn't that Vanquish delightful? I can strongly imagine one of those entering The Russe Collection shortly, veritable dramticus incarnate.

Also, £19950 for that green M5 was simply out of order. The Brummie played me like a filthy piano on that one!

I would expect nothing less. Designed & built to run flat out all day every day across the much bigger Fatherland, it's not exactly going to have it's work cut out ambling along Albion's small and slow roads is it ?

200,000 miles - just run in, surely ? Real question is - can you hear the radio over 140 mph ?

My 530 ( a couple of models down from the M5) will cruise all day at 130 mph, and not break sweat.

Sat in one at Gaydon and the headroom was no good. Great shame as I considered a good used one as a possible move on from the porsche when I grow up!!

DeR - Never been near a V600 to check. Good ones are still well out of my league both on price and running costs though? Still happy with the porsche until I'm brainwashed into slowing down. Anyway, enough of trying to get me to change/expand the stable. What's going on at DeR Towers? Which one do you predict changing next? and to what?

Guy - Much as the maser was a quick car at Brunters, it's not really the car for me, even in manual form. Not really hooligan proof, you've got to think of safety when you're going out to play.

Given its faster (700Nm) and has got bigger brakes (an inherent M5 weakness), and is just as subtle and understated as the current M5, it'd be hard to argue with the Alpina B5 as future replacement for the panzer.. forget the v10 'all or nothing' boyracer screaming nonsense, this is where it at
