I have just had the Inspection 1 on my 1999 M3 and the dealer has informed me that I have problems with the Vanos that require immediate attention.

The quotation for this was £1000 for parts and £700 for labour. Does anybody know of a reputable and cheaper alternative to a BMW dealership in the London area?

Any help or advice most welcome.

if the car is still under warenty BMW should pay all the costs. Haggle with the dealer very hard on this one or take your car to another dealer.

Specialists wont touch this one as they don't have the correct cam timimg setup tools that BMW use. If you have an aftermarket warranty they wont cough up as it is classed as wear and tear (They have wised up to this). Average cost is £1600 dependant on dealer. I believe that this price is subject to the four-plus scheme. If your Manuf. Warranty has run out, I would hang around the back of the BMW dealer workshop and offer to take the chief Mech out for a rake of beers and a curry. He may get you some discount.
